The purpose of this study is to analyze domestic and overseas petroliferous sedimentary basins and their petroleum potential. Petroleum information system was also developed to provide information and knowledge on the domestic and overseas basins. This system has been played an important role to support petroleum data management and to provide useful information. Recent changes in information environment envisage to improve usability and management of information system. The system renewal plan is composed of three steps. In the first step, open-source GIS web server will be replaced. In the second step, web page of PetroDB will be re-implemented for cross-browsing. In the final step, convenience functions will be developed for the diverse web internet application. This year, as the second step of this project, cross-browsing has been implemented and user information has been modified according to the personal information protection law. For more efficient use of PetroDB system, Google map has been added and GeoWeb cache has been optimized. Also new web content has been added.
Using 15,000 L-km of multi-channel seismic data, sequence stratigraphic analysis was carried out in the Jeju Basin, southern continental shelf area of Korea. Combining lithologic and paleontologic data achieved from 5 wells, analysis of sedimentary environment and modelling of petroleum system were also carried out. These studies revealed that the organic matter is composed of Type III kerogen, deposited in fluvial, lacustrine to shallow marine environments during the Eocene and Oilgocene age. Maturation depth of oil and gas is estimated to be 3,500 m to 4,000 m. However, Eocene to Oligocene sediments with burial depth more than 4km occur in the local depressions along the southern part of the Block 4 and 5. In the Browse Basin, northwestern part of Australia, 2D petroleum system modelling was carried out using open and commercial data. Numerous source rocks of Triassic to Cretaceous ages have been identified in this basin. The shale deposited during Late Callovian to Late Aptian is estimated to be the highest quality source rocks, and entered the oil window during the Late Cretaceous to Early Tertiary in the mid basin and during the Neogene on the eastern margin of the basin. The most significant reservoirs are Late Jurassic syn-rift reservoir sand and Lower Cretaceous lowstand fans and onlapping transgressive facies. In the deepwater Taranaki Basin, thick (> 6 km) Jurassic to Late Cretaceous sediments can be a major source rock, which are absent in the onshore and shelf parts of the basin. Oil and gas continuously expelled from late Cretaceous to recent and probably accumulated in the Late Cretaceous deltaic sandstone and Eocene transgressive sandstone as well as deep sea channel sands formed in the Paleocene. Major trap is drape-over anticline over the basement high. Early to Middle Eocene compression also resulted in the formation of anticline in the southwestern part of the basin.
The East Natuna Basin is located in the eastern part of the Natuna Island, between the exclusive economic zone of Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam. In the graben and trough, thick Oligocene to Quaternaty sediments were deposited on the granitic basement. Shale and coal of the Gabus and Arang formations are estimated to be the major source rocks. The carbonate reef of the Terumbu Formation and intercalating sandstones in the Gabus and Arang formations act as excellent reservoirs. In addition to the structural trap, carbonate of the Terumbu Formation and sandstone wedges in Gabus and Arang formations are excellent stratigraphic traps. Recent successful gas discoveries in the Levantine Basin (eastern Mediterranean Sea) attracted many international oil companies. This basin was rifted during the Triassic and evolved into passive continental margin during the Middle Jurassic and Late Cretaceous. During the Late Cretaceous and Tertiary compressional tectonic force resulted in uplift and inversion structures. More than 12 km thick sedimentary successions were deposited since the Triassic. Middle Triassic to Tertiary shale and carbonates can act as a source rock, and the expelled hydrocarbon accumulated in the thick turbidite sandstone reservoir deposited during the Early Miocene. Thick Messinian salt is a perfect seal of the petroleum system. The Kara Sea occupies the northern part of the West Siberian Basin where thick (7-10 km thick) sediments were deposited in the trough region since the Permian. Major source rock is Bazhenov Shale (20 to 60 m thick) containing 18 trillion tons of organic matter. This shale was deposited during the Jurassic highstand of sea level, probably under anaerobic or dysaerobic conditions with TOC ranging from 1% to 15% (average 5.1%). In the basin center, the source rock entered the oil window since the Late Cretaceous, occupying 90% of oil and gas in this basin. Most of the oil accumulated in Jurassic carbonate clinorofms onlapping the basement, forming a stratigraphic traps. In the Barentz Sea, Middle to Upper Jurassic and Neocomian shale is the major source rock containing organic matter ranging from 1.2% to 6% (TOC). The Jurassic shale entered oil window before the Tertiary, ranging in depth from 3 km to 4 km. Major reservoir rocks are Jurassic to Early Cretaceous clastic sediments, in which oil and gas are accumulated in various structural and stratigraphic traps such as arch, anticline, pinch outs, salt related traps and fractured basement rocks. In spite of huge amount of oil and gas resources in the Arctic area, exploration in this area is hampered by permafrost, sea ice and ice berg. Diverse techniques such as construction of artificial island, ERD (extended reach drilling), monitoring of drilling, enhanced recovery technique for heavy oil in permafrost and iced sea were also speculated.
