Acid spills are frequently occurring in Korea with increased production, use, storage, and transport of acids accompanied by the growth of related industries. However, lack of understanding of the impacts of acid spills on soil and groundwater environments has hampered the development of proper response strategies and remediation technology. An advanced prevention/response system needs to be established along with an improved human and social infrastructure to prevent and efficiently respond to chemical accidents.
Understanding the behavior and transport of spilled acids in soil and groundwater environments requires a multi-disciplinary approach since they go through a variety of chemical and biogeochemical reactions with complex geomedia. However, to the best of our knowledge, no such research has been done so far in Korea. We launched a one-plus-three year project to develop a system for the evaluation of vulnerability of soil and aquifer types in Korea. The objectives of the first year were to assess the impacts of acid spills on various geomedia and to develop a conceptual model for the description of reaction and transport of acids in underground environments. We expect that the results of this study would serve as basic data for future research.
We did a literature review focusing on the amounts of domestic production, distribution, and consumption of acids and their spill cases. In particular, we focused on the chemistry and toxicity of four acids classified as “accident preparedness substances,” including hydrochloric, nitric, sulfuric, and hydrofluoric acid. On the basis of the literature review, we selected sulfuric and hydrofluoric acid as the chemicals of priority control.
We selected granite, a metamorphic rock, and a sedimentary rock as the model rock samples. We also selected a granite-origin soil, a metamorphic rock-origin soil, and an industrial complex soil originated from granite. We secured two reference clay minerals including kaolinite (KGa-2) and montmorillonite (SWy-2). We also collected a concrete and an asphalt sample as the artificial media to represent the roads and waterways.
We developed a conceptual model describing the reaction between the acids and geomedia. First, we defined geomedia’s vulnerability index as the reciprocal of geomedia’s buffering capacity against the moving acid front. Second, based on the vulnerability index, we identified the mandatory factors to consider in developing the vulnerability evaluation system, such as spill scenarios, physical properties of acids, geologic setting, acid neutralizing reactions and processes, distance to the groundwater level, and flow properties of soils and aquifer systems. Third, we selected the specific sets of data required by each mandatory factor for the development of the vulnerability evaluation system.
To obtain the input data required by the vulnerability evaluation system, we set up a standard procedure for assessing the acid neutralizing capacity of geomedia using a multi-disciplinary approach, considering geochemical, mineralogical, microbiological, and hydrogeological aspects of the neutralization reaction between acids and geomedia. Using the standard procedure, we performed the reaction between a concentrated (98%, 36N) sulfuric acid and geomedia to simulate the spill accidents of the concentrated sulfuric acid. We also conducted experiments using a dilute (0.01N) sulfuric acid and geomedia to simulate the cases in which the concentrated sulfuric acid had been diluted after the spill events. The results showed that geomedia had a wide range of acid neutralizing capacity. For example, after 50 hours, the pH increased to 7.6 from the initial value of 2.0 in the reaction of the dilute sulfuric acid with granite. On the contrary, in the reaction with kaolinite, the pH remained at 2.0 under the same experimental conditions.
X-ray diffraction showed that the reflections from plagioclase significantly decreased after the reaction with the 0.01N sulfuric acid, compared with those of quartz as the inert reference. In the reaction with montmorillonite, the (001) reflection of montmorillonite notably decreased, suggesting dissolution of montmorillonite by the reaction with the 0.01N sulfuric acid.
Acid concentration, reaction time, and recovery time were used as major variables in the assessment of the microbial community responses to acid shocks. Pyrosequencing and DGGE results showed that acid-resistant and acid-sensitive species could be identified and grouped in the soil samples. In general, the spore forming, gram positive species were acid-resistant whereas gram negative species were acid-sensitive.
In summary, we hypothesized that the impact of acid spills on the soil and aquifer systems could be quantitatively assessed using the concept of vulnerability index defined as the reciprocal of the acid-neutralizing capacity against the moving acid front. The essential mandatory factors for the development of the vulnerability evaluation system were identified, including the physical properties of acid, physiochemical and mineralogical properties of geomedia, acid neutralization reactions, and flow characteristics of soils and aquifer systems. On the basis of the year 2014’s outcome, the design of the vulnerability evaluation system will be carried out in the year 2015. A prototype of the vulnerability evaluation system will be developed in the year 2016. The prototype will be tested and improved with real data and the vulnerability evaluation system will be completed in the last year of the project, the year 2017.
