The necessities for rare elements, being crucial for advanced industries, are increasing, however, we mostly depend them on imports from foreign countries. In order to secure the stable supply of the elements for our domestic industries, a great efforts are put on the development of resources abroad and civil mines.
However, it is also necessary to secure the prospecting areas with a high potential for the elements within the country irrespective of productive amount.
Geochemical exploration is very efficient to find the extended ore bodies at the known mineralized areas and concealed ore bodies at the unknown areas. To decide the distributions of rare elements and probable areas for development, production of nationwide geochemical maps is required, and based on the maps, detailed geochemical surveys should be undertaken to select target sites appropriate for mining.
In this project, the regional geochemical maps of rare elements will be produced in the area of the Kangrung geologic map (1:250,000) which contain the Taebacksan mineralization area of the highest potential, and geochemical background values of 16 elements (As, Bi, Cd, Cu, Ga, Ge, In, Mo, Pb, Sb, Sn, Ta, Tl, U, W and Zn) will be provided to find the most probable area for rare element development in the near future.
The study area of the 1st year (2013) was the southeastern part of the Kangrung geologic map including the biggest mineralized zone of base metals, such as Pb and Zn. The investigated area of this year (2014) was the middle and northwestern parts of the whole studied area. Target elements of In, Cd, As are closely associated with the Pb-Zn deposits, and those of Bi, Sn, Cu are associated with the W-Mo deposits, and the potentials of rare elements are presumed to be high in this area. Stream sediments were collected as target media by wet sieving of fine grains (less than 150 ㎛). The total number of samples was 2,662 and the sampling density was about one per 3.6㎢. Sixteen rare elements were analyzed using ICP-MS at the Analytical Department of KIGAM.
When compared with each average values, In, Cd and Bi were less than 1mg/kg, the elements of Mo, Tl, Ta, Sb, Ge, W, Sn and U were in order of several mg/kg, and the elements of As, Ga, Cu, Pb and Zn were in several dozens or hundreds mg/kg. Statistical distributions of the contents were asymmetrical with many outliers higher than median values in most of element excluding Ge and Ga.
The high correlationships were shown in pairs of W-Mo-Bi, Pb-Zn-Cd and Tl-U presenting general geochemical associations.
Geochemical maps of the 16 elements were produced using the method of inverse distance weight (IDW) for the whole part of Kangrung. Compared to South China and Japan, the medians of Bi, Ga, Pb, Tl and U were higher than those from China and Japan. Generally, the values of most elements (especially Pb, Zn etc) were high in the Youngnam metamorphic complex in southeastern part of area, and the chemical distributions of U, Tl, Ga, etc. reflected well the geology underneath the sampling sites.
The discriminating values (background) for the anomalous areas of rare elements were selected as “(1.5 x IQR)+3rd quartile” in the boxplot of each element. Mostly, the areas of high rare element contents were corresponding to the existing metal mines. However, certain areas seemed to be suggesting new mines or extension of existing ore bodies. For example, the anomalous area of Cd greater than the discriminating value (0.734 mg/kg) corresponded to the existing Pb-Zn and Au-Ag mines. However, the Cd-anomalous area in the Yeongweol limestone was presumed to be related with hydrothermal mineralization (maybe, Pb-Zn ore deposit) along the unidentified faults or fractures proposing new noble or base metal deposits of the area.
