An Intelligent Neuro-Device based on nanowire was developed through a convergence technology fusing IT (Information Technology), BT (Bio Technology) and NT (Nano Technology). The purpose of this research is to secure the original technology of the neural signal processor with nanowire electrodes that can detect and record a neuro signal by a neural signal processor for restoration, regeneration and replacement of an injured nerve system. In order to develop the neural signal processor, we successfully developed the multi-channel neural signal recoder and the nanowire electrode assembly.
A neural recording processor were implemented in a 65 nm CMOS technology with the size of 0.2 ㎟ per channel. The prototype device operates in a 1.2 V supply and its power consumption is only 45 μW/channel. This work achieves both 65 dB common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR) and +/- 10 V common-mode voltage range (CMVR). The input referred noise level of this work is only 0.2 μVrms with a bandwidth of 10 Hz– 10 kHz. We also succeeded in developing an active neural processor that not only detects neural signals but also stimulates neurons with a pulse current. The duration and amplitude of the pulse current were 2 ms and 1~16 μA, respectively. In addition, our neural processor could successfully detect neural signals irrespective of input impedance of the interface between electrodes and neurons while conventional processors have detected signals for a limited range of impedance, which makes ours superior to others. As a result, our processor can be applied for various applications such as in-vivo and in-vitro experiments at the same time.
Nanowires were prepared on both ceramic and Si substrates using Au and Pt and used for neural signal detection. In particular, to improve the signal detection by improving an impedance mismatch at the interface between nerve and nanowire, we developed the methodology of controlling the impedance by sequentially exposing only the top of the Pt nanowire which was passivated by SiO2. We also developed and demonstrated the methodology of making arrays of metallic electrodes by way of a local phase transformation from oxide to metal.
In-vivo experimental tests were conducted on a facial nerve of a rabbit as well as mice brain using a nanowire electrode assembly. Localized neural signals using the multi nano-wire channel configuration were acquired from both neurons in the brain in-vivo and cultured neurons in-vitro with a high signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR). Stimulated and spontaneous signals were both acquired. Nanowires were capable of detecting neural signals and can be effectively used for localizing the origins of the signals, which makes our devices unique and original.
