Purpose & contents:
The purpose of this research was to develop effective synthesis methods of nanostructures and to investigate the mechanism of interaction between microwave and materials. In addition, the research tried to contribute to the new realm of chemical engineering by establishing engineering base for the microwave chemical reactions.
In the first three years, effective synthesis methods of new nanomaterials were developed and their mechanism was investigated with liquid-solid reactions, pressurized liquid reactions, and solid-vapor reactions using microwaves. In the fourth year, we established engineering base needed for microwave reactor design and scale-up, and in the fifth year, we further developed the knowledge obtained in the fourth year and carried out application experiments.
Result:
In the first period, effective synthesis methods of new nanomaterials were developed using microwave chemical reactions, and their mechanism was studied. In the first year, nanostructures including ZnO nanostructures, zinc aluminum layered double hydroxides, zinc nanostructures, carbon-doped ZnO nanostructures, CuO structures, and zinc citrates were synthesized. In the second year, syntheses of porous ZnO nanostructures, three dimensional hierarchical ZnO/ZnSe heterostructures, ZnO/ZnSe nanowire array, and porous ZnO/ZnSe heterostructures were reported. In the third year, microwave was directly irradiated onto metal substrates (Ti, Fe, and stainless steel) to synthesize metal oxides like TiO2, hematite, and Cr-doped hematite, SiC, SiOx, and carbon nanotubes. Total 32 SCI papers were published in the first period. In the second period, we took a step forward the establishment of engineering base and industrial application by performing simulation of microwave reactor design and feedback experiments. As the feedback experiment, we achieved high purity carbonization (over 90 at%) and graphitization for the first time, which was considered to be impossible before. It was also revealed that the existing theory to explain microwave heating of solid carbon was wrong by analyzing the parameters used in the theory.
Expected Contribution:
1. Synthesis of various nanostructures became possible. The method can be applied to photocatalysis and fabrication of omniphobic surface, and so on.
2. Conversion of glucose into catalytic carbon particle in fuel cell is possible. Thus, development of low-cost catalyst is planned, which can replace expensive Pt catalyst.
3. Graphite takes the most important place in industry among carbon materials, but the manufacturing process requires immense energy. If the microwave graphitization is successfully scaled up, it will bring a huge ripple effect in the industry.
