Purpose & contents:
Long-lifetime all solution-proccesable organic thin-film transistor (OTFT) is the field of core technology for commercialization of flexible display. Securing the stability of device in long-time operation by preventing performance degradation with time due to internal and external factors is prerequisite for flexible displays using organic semiconductors. The final achievements of this research project are as below.
1) Charge carrier mobility > 0.5 c㎡/Vs, on/off ratio > 108, developing the solution-proccesable organic semiconductor materials having excellent oxidation stability
2) Distribution of interface trap density < 40 meV, developing low-temperature processable polymer dielectric materials having operation stability of 5,000 hours
3) Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR) < 10-2 g/㎡/day, developing solution-processable passivation layer having air stability of 5,000 hours operation
4) Secure the fabrication technology of long-lifetime OTFT suitable for driving circuits of flexible display
Result:
1) Developing organic semiconductor materials : Our group developed organic semiconductor materials which show charge carrier mobility over 0.5 c㎡/Vs via structure control in molecular engineering. We developed polymer materials which show high charge carrier mobility (9.4 c㎡/Vs) by maximizing the rate of self-assembly via introducing electron donor-electron acceptor structures which enhancing intermolecular interaction and improving planarity in the molecules. Furthermore, we investigated about 10 organic semiconductor materials introducing various moieties.
2) Developing organic dielectric materials : We developed low-temperature photocurable cyclic olefin copolymer, polymer blend, polymer brush, etc. With these dielectric materials, we could fabricate OTFTs which show outstanding performance and operation stability by enhancing crystallinity of organic semiconductor crystals and eliminating interface traps between organic semiconductor layer and dielectric layer, respectively.
3) Developing solution-processable passivation layer : We developed excellent passivation layer via non-hydrolyzable sol-gel synthesis and introducing fluorine-containing functional groups. Furthermore, we developed more dense passivation layer via UV-curing which show the value of WVTR below 10-3 g·m-2·day-1.
4) Developing backplane for flexible displays : We applied OTFT technologies from previous studies to backplane development. As a result of simulation experiments for operating OLEDs based on OTFTs, we obtained the result that our backplane could be operated successfully.
Expected Contribution:
Flexible display, which can secures ubiquitous networking, is being evaluated as next-generation flat panel display. Its applications will expand from electronic newpaper/book, smart card, PDA, tablet PC to portable medical diagnostic and hazardous material sensitive display devices. Flexible display industries will be projected to soar to 420 billion dollars in 2020. We expect that this study can contribute to commercializing flexible display and enabling the integration development as well as academic development for the field of organic electronics by securing electrical conductivity and oxidation stability of organic semiconductors, analyzing the origin and kinds of organic semiconductor/dielectric interface traps, developing solution-processable passivation layers interrupting the permeation of water and oxygen
