Purpose&contents
The objective of this 'National Leading Research Laboratory' project is to develop the 1 kW regenerative fuel cell and integrated control system which consists of PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) electrolyzer and fuel cell with solar renewable energy. The optimal conditions of temperature, humidity and flow rate are studied by optimizing the bipolar plate flow field and physicochemical characteristics to minimize the parasitic power of BOP (Balance of Plant; compressor, heater, heat exchanger). The scale-up technologies of active area (increase of current in parallel) and stacking (increase of voltage in serial) are secured, therefore, 1 kW regenerative fuel cell, 20 unit cells stack of active area 150 cm2 was tested durability over 750 h with programmable power supply and electronic load.
Result
Regenerative fuel cell is organized electrolyzer which produces hydrogen and oxygen from energy and water, and fuel cell which produces electricity and water from hydrogen and oxygen. In this 'National Leading Research Laboratory' project, MEA (Membrane Electrode Assembly) is adopted as it is, and the optimizations of bipolar plate flow field and physicochemical characteristics are studied. Power supply simulated renewables, water control and storage, hydrogen/oxygen control and storage, heat exchanger and mass flow controller, membrane, catalyst degradation detector sensor and electronic load are studied and optimized numerically and experimentally. Since physicochemical characteristics are complementary, temperature, humidity and pressure change heat and mass transfer, electrochemical reaction and efficiency of PEM electrolyzer and fuel cell. These parameters affect performance and life of MEA. The integrated control system with solar renewable energy is deducted from the physicochemical characteristics and operating strategy, the durability test over 750 h of 1 kW regenerative fuel cell will provide a database, therefore, intellectual property rights, reports, paper publication, excellent research and development manpower and publicity activities on Korean people and industry for new and renewable energy.
Expected Contribution
Regenerative fuel cell can convert and store energy using hydrogen as energy carrier with load fluctuated renewable energy efficiently, and be used as an UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply), an unmanned aircraft/submarine and a spacecraft power supply. In this project, the sustainable energy supply system makes a new paradigm which energy production is closer to energy consumption while minimizing. This motivates a present facing energy research as well as a future-oriented energy technology combined with the high technology 6T. The climate change is big problem, and only 1% of the imported energy is equivalent to $ 800 million, and this technology is a higher value-added business. This research will contribute to fostering excellent research and development manpower for the future sustainable energy industry.
