● MMV Compressed Sensing
● Dynamic MRI Compressed Sensing
● Diffuse Optical Tomography using Compressed Sensing
● Nanoscopy using Compressed sensing
● Neuroimage Analysis using Compressed sensing
● Interior Tomography using Multiscale Compressed Sensing

Purpose&contents
○ Recently, a new sampling theory called compressive sampling theory was proposed in signal processing community. According to this new theory, very accurate reconstruction is possible even from very limited data measurements which breaking Nyquist sampling limit. This research will show that the compressive sampling theory can become an essential tools for improving next generation imaging systems in biology and medicine.
○ In this research, we have studied on not only compressed sensing theory, but also its applications. In the applications, physical models of various biomedical imaging modalities: MRI, fMRI, fNIRS, x-ray, CT, PET, nanoscopy, DOT have been extensively investigated in order to properly apply compressed sensing theory. Furthermore, we figured out that many biomedical imaging problems can be interpreted as MMV problem. Thus, we established theoretical backgrounds of MMV, and developed algorithms to solve the problems.
Result
● MMV Compressed Sensing theory and applications
√ In this research, we have shown that limitations of previous MMV research, and also have found for the first time that inherent geometric structure of MMV called “spark” should be utilized to achieve ∫0 bound. Moreover, we first discovered that CS and array signal processing are connected.
● Dynamic MRI Compressed Sensing
√ As we have shown that kt BLAST/SENSE is nothing but the first iteration of our compressed sensing algorithm(kt-FOCUSS), and sampling patterns of previous method are suboptimal, MRI imaging quality can be much improved by using the proposed algorithm.
● Diffuse Optical Tomography using Compressed Sensing
√ DOT problem is a typical nonlinear inverse problem which is usually solved by linearization or an iterative algorithm in a conventional approach. However, we first showed that nonlinear property can be eliminated by interpreting DOT problem as a MMV problem. Thus, the nonlinear inverse problem can be exactly solved.
● Nanoscopy using Compressed sensing
√ We invented new type of Nanoscopy as one of the main interests in optics community based on MMV compressed sensing theory. Specifically, our system can achieve a super-resolution beyond a diffraction limit without specially designed fluorescence probes or a complicated optical system design.
● Neuroimage Analysis using Compressed sensing
√ We proposed a new resting state analysis method that can overcome limitations of ICA. The proposed method can observe a subnetwork change related brain disease in compressed sensing perspective.
● Interior Tomography using Multiscale Compressed Sensing
√ We first proposed a compressed sensing based semi-analytic reconstruction method by taking advantage of analytic reconstruction. By using the proposed interior tomography algorithm, a commonly used 3D helical trajectory data can be accurately reconstructed about 1~2 seconds per slice.
Expected Contribution
○ The proposed CS based methods for MRI, CT, optical imaging and etc. can maximize utility of biomedical modalities by achieving a high resolution image with limited measurements or reduced radiation exposure time. It can develop a new imaging system to open new imaging markets.
○ The developed CS based reconstruction algorithms for x-ray, CT, MRI with help of this research funding are already well transferred to the related company. Based on this experience, we will keep developing practically adaptable methods.
