Purpose & contents: Hydrogels are a fascinating class of materials. They belong to the group of soft matter and contain more than 70 % water. While many synthetic routes to prepare hydrogels are known and they are already in intensive use, e.g. in food and in medical technology, they are not well understood so far. The intent of this project is to gain a better understanding of the structure‐property relationships of hydrogels with different composition. It is intended to use hydrogels with a very broad range of properties (chemical composition, modulus, stretchability, …). This will allow for detecting the general trends, which will be the base for understanding the connections between molecular structure and end‐user properties.develop double‐network hydrogels with self‐healing capability, which are expected to show extraordinary strength. These properties are investigated by the applicant's group by utilizing a variety of rheological techniques. These are supplemented by various analytical techniques by the project partners. Together a full characterization of hydrogels will lead to a good understanding of the structure and the properties. In a follow‐up project, the possibility of these hydrogels for tissue replacement and sensor/actuator applications could be explored.
Result: The contribution of the applicant’s group to this undertaking is to synthesize and characterize the hydrogels mechanically, i.e., rheologically. Previous experiments have shown that hydrogels are not easy to characterize mechanically, but when the challenges are understood, it is possible to obtain data in the same quality as for “normal” polymer. The applicant has gained significant experience in that field. Double-network hydrogels with high mechanical stability and high biocompatibility will be synthesized relying on zwitterionic supramolecular crosslinkers for self-healing capability The rheological characterization will involve: -temperature ramps: to find out the physical transition temperatures (e.g. the lower critical solution temperature (LCST)). -Time sweeps at fixed temperature allow for on-line observation of the gel-formation. -Non-linear elongation and shear: assesses the stress and strain limits of the hydrogels. -Frequency sweeps and creep & creep recovery tests in the linear viscoelastic regime: give information about the structure, crosslinking density, and type of response (rubber, gel, …) -Large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) is another very successful technique to characterize the structure of polymers. In summary, a thorough rheological investigation of the properties of hydrogels with a wide variety of properties coupled with a thorough analytical characterization will be used to deepen the general understanding of the structure-property relationships of hydrogels as well as to create a new class of hydrogels.
Expected Contribution: From all these measurements, it shall be concluded which strength in hydrogels can be achieved while retaining self-healing capability. Furthermore, general structure-property-relatationships for hydrogels shall be established. The crosslinking density can be obtained from the linear viscoelastic characterization by frequency sweeps via the plateau modulus. However, an unsolved question is whether this method stemming from the theory of rubbery elasticity, also works for sponge-like systems like hydrogels. In summary, a thorough analytical and rheological investigation of the properties of hydrogels with a wide variety of properties and self-healing capability coupled with a thorough analytical characterization will be used to create a general understanding of the structure-property relationships of hydrogels.
