Purpose&contents
This research aims at the development of new magnetically separable transition metal heterodimeric hybrid nanocrystal catalysts including palladium, rhodium, ruthenium or gold containing iron oxide for active and selective organic transformations without cumbersome filtration procedure. Palladium nanocrystal catalysts can be applied to various C-C, C-N, or C-O coupling reactions, while gold nanoparticles can be applied to cyclization reactions of substrates containing multiple unsaturated bonds. Use of chiral ligands, organic catalysts or two or more metal-containing catalysts can allow for stereoselective catalysis or tandem reactions through the employment of hybrid catalyst systems.
Result
The effective use of palladium-Fe3O4 hybrid nanocrystal catalysts was possible towards Suzuki, Heck and Sonogashira coupling reactions, and Wacker oxidation, Good catalytic activities of the heterogeneous catalyst systems was confirmed, and easy collection of the catalyst was verified through the use of an external magnet.
Palladium nanoparticles of a well-defined shapes could be prepared and the use of [1.0.0]-palladium nanoparticles towards the semihydrogenation of alkynes was studied. In this way, without hany additives the palladium catlayst alone showed an extermely cis-selective formation of alkenes without any by-products.
Therefore this shape-dependent catlayst can be used as environment-friendly and efficient catalysts for selective semihydrogenation. Through computer simulation, the observed selectivity was explained to give exclusive alkene formation, compared to the regularly used Pd/C or Lindlar type catalysts.
Carbon nanotubes with surface functional groups were used as heterogeneous supprot for palladium and platinum and new catalyst systems were developed for C-C bond formation and reduction reactions.
Expected Contribution
Filtration-free magnetic hybrid heterodimeric metal nanocrystal catalysts show a great potential to be applied to large scale industrial processes. Pd nanocrystal catalysts can be used for the construction of various C-C, C-N, and C-O bonds. One-pot multiple tandem reactions have been possible through the use of metal-metal or metal-organic hybrid catalyst systems. Research participants in this study have been equipped with proper training for techniques needed for the recyclable transition metal catalysts and selective organic transformations and will contribute to the development of national research and development.
