Purpose&contents The objective of this research is the study of the flight instability in the wake generated by the precedent aircraft. Overall procedures consist of three steps. The first step is to understand physical characteristics about generation, propagation and dissipation of wing tip vortex by precedent aircraft. The second step is to analyze instabilities of the aircraft in the wake. The last step is to design wake alleviation devices. This research is progressed simultaneously experimental and numerical analysis. A new concept of wake alleviation devices can be designed by analyzing vortex structures and its influences by applying the latest aerodynamic models and by comparing systematically the former wake alleviation devices. 2009, the world's air traffic has reached 2 billion passengers, and has shown 4.4% annual increase. To overcome limits of airport capacities by traffic increase, the methods are needed that improve the airport efficiency. One of the most economical ways is to reduce separation time intervals between aircrafts. These time intervals are made by the wake of the precedent aircraft. The swirl velocities in wake vortices are strong enough to cause an encountering aircraft to roll uncontrollably, thus it is required enough long time to avoid flight instability of following aircraft. Therefore, we will consider the methods to reduce time intervals by analysis of vortex structures and its influences in this study. The physical characteristics of vortex behavior are understood by numerical analysis from Modified Betz Method, which assumes steady fully developed vortices, to Navier-Stokes CFD Method, which can analyze vortex generation procedures and complex vortex interactions. To analyze instabilities of the following aircraft, numerical analysis codes are developed such as Unsteady Source-Doublet Panel Method coupled with Time-Marching Free Wake Model. The experiments will be conducted for the data acquisition of flow visualizations and roll moments of following aircraft in the wind tunnel, and for the validation with numerical results. Lastly a new concept of wake alleviation devices can be designed by comparing between experimental and numerical analysis. Result In this study, we propose a chipped wingtip shape such as reducing device of vortex, it was verified through experiment and CFD. It was confirmed that the peak value of the tangential velocity is reduced by 50% with a tangential velocity distribution in the vortex core which can check the vortex strength. As a result of analyzing the reduction of the vortex along the various shapes and examining the change in the aerodynamic characteristics, it was confirmed that the drag increase and the tangential velocity reduction increases linearly at 20 chord down stream from trailing edge. Reduction efficiency of the vortex is high angle of attack is increased in all cases. In the case of a real aircraft, because it is operated in the high angle of attack during takeoff and landing, the usefulness of chipped wingtip shape is even greater. If it is applied to a real aircraft, chipped wingtip shape which is designed in this study, will be the innovative device to reduce the instabillity of following aircraft and to improve the efficiency of the airport. Expected Contribution The designed wake alleviation devices will make to increase the flight stability and the efficiency of working airport. These devices can weaken vortex strengths of the precedent aircraft, thus shorten time intervals between the next aircraft. Research results can reduce aircraft noise related to vortex strengths directly or indirectly. BVI noise can be reduced in rotary wings as well as fixed wings. The devices will increase efficiency of wind turbine and reduce noise by employing wind turbine, thus it will also contribute to wind turbine technology.
