There are not enough data-set on alcohol consumption, correlation between alcohol use and disease, and especially the basic data-set something like the alcohol-attributable fractions of the death and disease in Korea. So we usually use the other countries' alcohol-attributable fractions of death and disease for making the national alcohol policies. Having the original Korean Alcohol-Attributable Fraction data is the most urgent task on the alcohol research field in Korea. The first aim in this paper is to describe the prevalence of alcohol consumption and related health problems. The second aim is to examine whether the differences of current and previous alcohol use have an impact on differences in the disease prevalence. The third aim is to find the alcohol-attributable fractions of each disease and alcohol-related death impacts. The fourth aim is to estimate the life expectancy which was lost by drinking. The most important data on alcohol-related health problems include those on mortality, traffic accidents, the treatment of alcohol-related health problems. Mortality data are collected from 'Annual Report on the Cause of Death Statistics in 2005' published in 2006 by National Statistics Office. The materials are all classifiable data, 135,405 cases of male and 110,106 cases of female. The cases of alcohol-related deaths analyzed belong to one of 9 categories. The Korean national samples were selected from the National Statistical Office' data-set which based on the population census in 2005.
1,450 households were selected randomly. We let the interviewers have 'face-to-face interview plus sealed envelope' with every adult family members in the household which was selected randomly from the August 10th to 25th, 2007. The questionnaire was asked the respondents to answer a series of questions about their alcohol use and associated health problems, tobacco and other drug use, life styles, and demographic and background characteristics. In conducting the data analysis, 2,193 cases from 7 metropolitan cities and 9 provinces were used. Alcohol-attributable fractions were calculated from the equation below.
{P0 and P1 are the prevalence rates for non-users and users respectively, and RR1 is the relative risk for the users relative to non-users)
Indirect method is been listing below.
The major findings may be summarized as follows:
The Odds Ratio of the liver disease, like as steatosis, hepatic cirrhosis and hepatitis, also odds ratio of respiratory diseases, prostatitis, gastric ulcer, enteritis and pancreatitis are greater among the other diseases. Hepatic cirrhosis (67%), liver steatosis (72%), Enteritis (52%), pancreatitis (50%), and hepatitis (41%) have the highest the alcohol-attributable fractions among the other diseases. Alcohol-attributable fractions of other genitourinary disease (33%), other disease of respiratory system (27%), and Gastric ulcer (23%) are also somewhat high. The results of this study must be viewed within the context of its limitations. This study is subject to the limitations of any face-to-face interview survey with structured questionnaires. However, such surveys have been considered generally valid in examining alcohol responses (Cooper et al. 1981; Midanik 1988). Furthermore, there may be larger, unmeasured alcohol use andinformation of disease that couldn't be included in the questionnaire. Although our analysis suffered some limitations which are common in cross-sectional analyses (Kohn 1987; Kuo et al. 2002), our results nevertheless provide the first new data regarding alcohol-attributable fractions of the special diseases in Korea. The number of alcohol related deaths is 26,058 for male and 13,570 for female. The effect on life expectancy at birth of eliminating all causes of alcohol-related deaths is 2.88 years for male and 1.21 years for female.
