First, we set up a aerosol mass spectrometer with convertible two ionization techniques: thermal desorption-electron impact ionization and laser desorption/ionization. This allows to analyze most of the components in the ambient aerosol regardless of its resistance to heat. This could be used to analyze realtime chemical composition of ambient aerosols as a result of the tests we conducted with various lab-generated particles.
Second, due to the rapid industrial growth, the amounts of pollutants emitted from large-scale point and mobile sources have been increased and their environmental impacts have become worse. In order to assess the environmental impacts of the pollutant emissions from large-scale sources, such as ocean-going ships, power plants, and petrochemical plants, an advanced analysis system should be developed, based on more rigorous atmospheric science knowledge, overcoming current dispersion-based environmental impact assessment (EIA). To accomplish this, in this study a general reactive-dispersive plume model was developed.
Third, brown carbon aerosols are part of organic aerosols. The amount of brown carbon and its absorption efficiency are highly uncertain, and this uncertainty needs to be reduced. We developed a new methodology which is observation based. In this method, we subtract observationally-constrained BC AOD and OA AOD from fine-mode AOD, which was compiled by Lee and Chung (2013). This method requires OA SSA as a prescribed variable. The subtracted result is sulfate+nitrate AOD. In order for the empirically-determined sulfate+nitrate AOD to be positive, OA SSA should be below 0.85 at 550nm. This strongly indicates a substantial amount of strongly-absorbing brown carbon over the globe.
Fourth, in the current study, we investigated reaction kinetics of Hg(II) with natural organic matter (i.e., humic and fulvic acids) and synthetic organic compound (i.e., anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate, AQDS) to form Hg(0) in dark and anaerobic environments. To determine the effect of chemical characteristics of various humic and fulvic compounds on Hg(II) reduction, we tested abiotic Hg(II) reduction rate in the presence of Suwannee River humic acid (SRHA), Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA), Pahokee peat humic acid (PHA), Elliott soil humic acid (ESHA), and anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS) that were reduced by Pd catalyst. In addition, the concentration effect of glutathione and chloride on Hg(II) reduction was evaluated in order to verify Hg(II) reduction kinetics in the natural ground water condition. It was found that the reduction extent and rate increased with increasing amount of natural and synthetic organic matter up to 5000:1 carbon to Hg ratio, with the exception of AQDS. When the reduced AQDS was used as a reducing agent for Hg(II), the reduction extent and rate increased with increasing ratio of carbon:Hg. The Hg(II) reduction rate showed an order of AQDS > soil humic acid > SR humic acid > SR fulvic acid, which agrees to the order of organic radical content in humic and fulvic acids. In the presence of glutathione and chloride, Hg(II) reduction rate largely decreased along wth increasing oncentrations of thiol and Cl. These results suggest that the bacterially or chemically reduced natural humic acids in groundwater would significantly reduce Hg(II) to Hg(0), and the reduction extents and rates are moslty dependant on the radical content in organic matter.
Fifth, in order to understand microbe-metals interaction and microbial ecology for environmental remediation and recovery, we have studied i) formation of diverse biogenic nano inorganic materials, ii) microbe-metals interaction and its mechanism, iii) application of biogenic nanomaterials for bioremediation treatment.
