o Development of high performance composite bipolar plates
Carbon fabric/epoxy composite bipolar plate is superior to conventional graphite or stainless steel bipolar plate. Although it has high electrical conductivity and mechanical properties due to high fiber volume fraction with resistance against acid environment, the electrical contact resistance is high due to the resin rich layer formed at the surface during molding process. To remove the surface resin rich layer, surface treatments such as plasma, and flame treatment were performed on the carbon composite bipolar plate. Also the surface of the bipolar plate was coated with expanded graphite to decrease the electrical contact resistance [1-3].
In this work, several methods to improve the performance of carbon composite bipolar plates for the HT-PEMFC were developed. Since Polyether ether ketone (PEEK), a thermoplastic polymer, has a high melting temperature, the carbon/PEEK composite bipolar plates coated with expanded graphite have been developed and their electrical and mechanical properties were measured. Also, phenolic composite bipolar plates embedded with carbon felt have been developed. Furthermore, elastomeric carbon fiber composite bipolar plates which showed low area specific resistance (ASR) without any surface treatment were developed. Two configurations for the elastomeric carbon bipolar plate were adopted: bipolar plate whose matrix is composed only of the elastomer, and hybrid composite bipolar plate whose matrix is epoxy at the center and elastomer at the surface. The developed elastomeric composite bipolar plates exhibited 30 m?좪cm2 of ASR, which satisfied the research targets.
o Development of advanced sandwich composite end plate structure
The end plates should provide uniform and adequate compaction pressure to the stack components to decrease the electrical contact resistance of stacks and to prevent fuel leakage.
It is also important to provide good thermal insulation for less heat loss and better cold-start characteristics. Therefore, an optimum end plate design is necessary to improve both the energy efficiency and reliability of the PEMFC.
In this work, an insulating foam-core composite sandwich structure and a pre-curved compliant pressure distributor for the design of end plates were employed for both good insulation performance and uniform pressure distribution for the PEMFC stack. The thermal insulation, flexural rigidity, structural safety, mass and cost of the end plates were considered in the design of the composite sandwich structure. Finally, the composite sandwich end plate of 600×140×92 mm3 was developed based on the optimum design method and it was found that the performance of the sandwich structure was much improved as shown in the following Table. Also, the uniformity of pressure distribution on the stack was guaranteed with the developed pressure distributor.
