This research has been performed to use domestic small logs for value-added products and usage such as multi-layer glued members used as structural members for heavy timber structures rather than using them for low-value products such as chips, pallets and fire wood. The multi-layer glued members manufactured using small square timbers produced from small logs were developed from the previous research. However, the small square timbers contain too much juvenile wood, which make the multi-layer glued members weak in terms of strength. In this research, large square timbers and laminations for structural glulam were combined with small square timbers to increase the compressive strength of the multi-layer glued column members and the bending strength of the multi-layer glued beam members.
As the results of the researches, the methods to increase the compressive strength of the multi-layer glued column members more than 30% and the bending strength of the multi-layer glued beam members were developed. And various type of connections were developed and tested to verify their shear strength and their moment-resistance. The connections using bolts, lags crews, cross steel plates together with tenon joint were developed. Also the glued-in rod connections using steel bar and epoxy adhesives were developed. The glued-in rod connections showed very high shear strength and moment-resistance compared with the other types of connections developed in this study.
Especially, the glued-in rod connections showed very high moment-resistance which were more than 5 times higher than those of the other types of connections. Therefore, the behavior of the glued-in rod connections were very close to the rigid connections and it was thought that the glued-in rod connections can be used as itself to form the lateral-force-resistance-system without additional structural reinforcement.
The results of this research can be used to design the heavy timber structures, especially, the Korean-style houses and to supply structural members for construction of Korean-style houses
