The progress in the STEM instrumentation to date has allowed determination of atomic positions with extremely high precision (<10 pm). When this information is available both for cation and oxygen columns, the associated order parameter fields (polarization, octahedral tilts, collective Jahn-Teller distortions) and atomic-level strains can be extracted directly from atomic position and plotted at a unit cell level. For images of thicker samples, the column shapes can be analyzed to recover partial information on the behavior of lighter sublattice that might not be resolved. However, explicit transitions from structural parameters to order parameters are only possible when the population of the sublattices is constant. As a counterexample, oxygen vacancy concentration gradient will result in gradual change in lattice spacing that can be interpreted as a stress gradient (and misinterpreted as a high-order ferroic coupling, e.g. flexoelectricity). Correspondingly, we aim to extend STEM/EELS approach towards
simultaneous mapping of chemical and physical phenomena, separating these contributions, and establishing intrinsic and practical limitations of such approach.
For materials with several competing functionalities, the lattice strains can be affected both by order parameters and chemistry. While minimal for laterally-uniform systems (relaxation in z-direction), these effects can be significant in the vicinity of structural defects and heterointerfaces. To decouple the chemical and physical mechanisms, we explored the multimodal image quantification methods that rely both on crystallographic STEM analysis and classical EELS techniques. In this, we juxtaposed structural imaging results with EELS analysis and local composition using model laterally uniform systems. Note that due to the nature of the EELS signal, which unlike HAADF originated in the coherently scattered portion of the electron beam, direct interpretation is usually impossible. Nevertheless, we expect that considering this data in tandem with high precision structural information will facilitate the interpretation. We will keep working to develop data analysis approaches using both classical and multivariate statistical methods.
