Soil management in reclaimed tidal lands is needed to overcome improper conditions of soils and grow crops. Various kinds of materials have been used to ameliorate soil physicochemical properties in reclaimed tidal lands. Most of studies on management of reclaimed tidal lands have been focused on effects of ameliorators on soil chemical properties, desalinization, organic matter content, and crop growth. Improving soil physical properties as well as soil chemical properties is an integral part of land management as it affects removal of salts from soils and growth of crops. However, little has been conducted on effects of soil ameliorators on soil physical properties such as soil aggregation, water movement and retention, and the resultant effects on crop growth. The purposes of this study are to 1) select proper materials for ameliorating saline-sodic soils of reclaimed tidal lands, 2) test effects of the materials on crop growth, 3) investigate effects of green manure crops in addition to the ameliorators selected, and 4) conduct field testing of applying the ameliorators and green manure and growing crop. Compost, gypsum, and phosphate were selected for the purpose of supplying organic materials and nutrients, increasing the stability of soil aggregates, and providing phosphate which is generally lack in reclaimed tidal lands. Soil water movement was improved when compost was applied at the conventional application rate, but the further application of compost did not increase the soil water movement. On the other hand, gypsum application significantly increased soil water movement while it decreased soil water retention, implying the possible effect of gypsum on flocculation of soil colloidal particles. To evaluate the effects of compost, gypsum, and phosphate in a saline-sodic soil on the growth of Chinese cabbage, pot experiments were conducted in 2013 and 2014. Mean dry matter yields of cabbages in 2014 were three times as much as those in 2013, although soil EC in 2014 did not decrease. However, Mean ratio of sodium ion (Na ) in soil solution (SAR1:5) significantly decreased from 17.3±1.1 in 2013 to 11.2±2.7 in 2014. Gypsum was the most effective in the growth of Chinese cabbages, which in S G treatment was 7.0 (48.2) and 7.9 g plant (16.6%) higher than those in S treatment in 2013 and 2014, respectively. Green manure crops did not grow well and affect soil physicochemical properties. Input of green manure crops increased 0.04% of soil carbon, but did not affect soil physicochemical properties and crop growth. Compost and gypsum also significantly improved soil physical properties and lettuce growth as they were applied in Saemangeum reclaimed land. Compost increased soil organic matter and soil water retention, but did not affect growth of lettuce. Gypsum decreased the ratio of silt- and clay-size aggregates in soils and increased the ratio of sand-size aggregates, reflecting the flocculation of colloidal particles by gypsum. Those effects also reflected the increase in soil water movement and the decrease in soil water retention as gypsum was treated. Mixture of rye and hairy vetch as a green manure crop increased 0.07% of soil organic carbon content. The green manure crops did not affect soil physical properties in a short period of time. However, the repeated input of green manure crops can increase soil organic matter and so the effect of green manure crops should be studied on improvement of soil physical properties for a long time.
