Derailment is related to the most of railway accidents and can lead to catastrophic accident, and it should be regarded as one of the principal factors to be hard on the railway safety. Most of foreign countries have so far conducted systematic research on the factors affecting the railway derailmen
Derailment is related to the most of railway accidents and can lead to catastrophic accident, and it should be regarded as one of the principal factors to be hard on the railway safety. Most of foreign countries have so far conducted systematic research on the factors affecting the railway derailment employing various analytic and experimental studies and established the safety system including derailment prevention technology and related safety standards and regulations for each countries.
The object of the present study is to develop the systematic assessment technology of the derailment safety of Korean railway system as well as to acquire the related technology and facility, in order to ensure and maximize the safety of Korean railway system. For systematic approach, this study is classified into four research categories such as the problem by wheel/rail defect, the problem by natural factor (earthquake, gale etc.), the monitoring of derailment risk and the development of derailment test facility. Four research categories are divided into several items as following.
1. Development of derail assessment and prevention technology on vehicle/rail defect
- Characterization and prevention of wheelset fatigue damage
- Characterization and prevention of wheel/rail rolling contact fatigue damage
- Derail prevention technology in curved line
- Running safety improvement in turnout
- Wheel flange management technology for derail prevention
2. Development of derail assessment technology by natural factor
- Running safety assessment of the train in earthquake
- Running safety assessment of the train by natural wind
- The mechanism to reduce the running safety due to thermal buckling of continuous welded rail
3. Development of the test and evaluation technology and the infrastructure to access the derailment safety
- The test and evaluation technology to access the derailment safety
- Wheelset derailment test facility
4. Development of monitoring system of derailment risk
- Monitoring system for underpart of railway vehicle
- Monitoring system of axle fretting fatigue damage
- Monitoring system of wheel tread damage
- Monitoring system to access abnormal vibration of railway bogie
- Monitoring system to alert rail breakage
