In modern poultry industry, it is pointed out that long wavelength acts as a sexually stimulant and short wavelength enhances growth and immunity via sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve stimulation. This nerve stimulation plays pivotal roles and regulates many physiological functions and therefore may offer exciting new alternatives to enhance poultry production. However, the impact of different monochromatic, combined light color and different light intensity stimulation on the performance, biochemical blood parameters, meat quality and immune responses of poultry were studied in several experiments. Expriment 1, 2 : we evaluated the effect of monochromatic(Pure Blue: PB 430-440nm; Bright Blue:BB, 460-470nm; Sky Blue : SB, 480〜490nm; Greenish Blue : GB, 510-550nm; Pure Green : PG, 530-540nm; Control : White) light emitting diode light color on performance, meat quality and biochemical blood parameters of broiler chicks in experiment 1. The results showed that higher production was found under the PB and GB treatments, and that heavier body weights were shown by those treatments(p<0.05) for finishing period. Consequently, better feed conversion ratio was attained in those treatments. Cooking loss showed higher in BB, but meat color was higher light than other treatments. Water hold capacity was the lowest in BB treatment, but was the highest in PG of all treatments. Shearing force showed the significantly lowest in GB treatment, but the highest in PB of all treatments(p<0.05). GB was confirmed to improve the broiler meat qualities. In experiment 2, the effect of monochromatic LED color on performance, bone, meat quality, blood properties were investigate in broiler chicks. Treatments were consisted of control(White : W), Yellow(Y : 590nm), Green(G) Blue(B: 490nm), Y→G, Y→B treatments at 21 days and G, B light continue up to 42 days of age.
Weight gain was higher (P < 0.05) in the Y→B treatments and similar feed conversion ratio was noted at the end of experiment. Birds reared under Y→G, Y→B light reduced the albumin, cholesterol, blood glucose in this experiments.
Bone density was the lowest in Y treatment, but unexpectedly higher in B treatment.
Experiment 3 and 4 : For further confirmation, studies were conducted separately with different combination of LED light wavelengths to evaluate the protein analysis by SDS-PAGE in intra muscle of broiler chicks in experiment 3. According to our results, Treatments were assigned to the light wave length in experiment 3. Muscle protein was greatly broken down near to 50KD and less than 25KD by Troponin-T marker application in BB treatment. To compare the investigate the break down of Troponin-T belong to index of muscle protein break down, western blot was applied and confirmed to be greatly increased the Tropoinin-T decomposition product under Pure Green Treatment. LED Light intensity was applied to evaluate the production, meat quality of broiler chicks in experiment 4. Six types of light intensity was assigned depending on the growth stage(20-20-20, 20-20-15, 20-15-10, 20-15-5. 20-10-10, 20-10-5lux). Weight gain, feed efficiency were improved in 20-10-10lux. Cooking loss, water holding capacity, shearing force were also the lowest in 20-10-10lux treatment. Serum cholesterol, glucose appeared to be higher in 20-10-5lux, but protein was the greatly reduced in 20-10-10lux treatment.
Experiments 5 and 6 : Cell proliferation assay(PMBC, ConA, LPS, PMA), cytokine expression, NO production, Humoral immunity response(ND antibody) by different LED light wave length was conducted in experiment 5. Control W(W), Pure green(PG), Sky blue(SB), Greenish blue(GB), Pure blue(PB), Bright Blue(BB) were used in this experiment. The ConA, LPS, PMA of PMBC were superior in control to those of other treatments at three weeks of age. However, the proliferation of both PMBC and Splenocyte under PB and BB LED treatments were greatly increased compare to those of other treatments. Thus, PB and BB LED color were confirmed to improve the immunity for finishing period of broiler chicks. NO production was the highest in control at three weeks of age, but significantly higher in BB treatment at the end of experiment. ND titer was not significantly different but orderly decreased to GB>BB>PG>PB>W>SB. In experiment 6, various LED light wave length(Y: 590, G: 560, B: 480nm, Y→G, Y→B, control) were applied to one thousand two hundred one day old broiler chicks. The parameters of experiment 5 were exactly analysed under different wave length. PBMC cell proliferation assay treated by ConA appeared to be higher in treatments relative to that of control except Y→B at three weeks of age(P<0.05), but small increment in only Y→B treatment cmpared to that of control from four to six weeks old broiler chicks. Spleen proliferation was to be higher than other treatments at three weeks old under Y and Y→B treatments, but was the maximized the G treatments at six weeks of age. Nitric oxide production seemed to be increased under G and B at three and six weeks old, respectively. IL-2, 10 were more proliferated in color treatments compared with control.
Finally, the result of the experiments suggested that the PG, and PB or BB increase the immunity for early growing or finishing period in broier chicks. Long wave length was greatly influence for early growing stage, but short wave length seemed to be positive in enhance the broiler immunity
