The title of this research is “study on marine geology and mineral resources in buried paleochannel of Seomjin River, South Sea”. Buried incised-channel systems are common features of Quaternary stratigraphy preserved on many continental shelves. The geomorphology of buried incised channels on continental shelves provides a broader understanding of the variables affecting deposition, erosion and preservation of shelf strata during Pleistocene sea level fluctuation. Most of the western Pacific continental shelves including the East China Sea, Yellow Sea were exposed subaerialy and contained coastal-plain sequence with buried fluvially incised channels in response to multiple cycles of relative sea-level change.
In the last 30 years, great attention globally has been paid to the forcing mechanisms, geomorphology, and ages of these successions of fluvial incisions and fills, providing insight into the development and sedimentary processes of shelves because of their significance as reservoir of hydrocarbon, mineral placer and source-to-sink system. But the research for the distribution and evolution of paleochannel in Korean continental shelves has not been carried out. So, the main purpose of this research are to establish the late Quaternary sequence stratigraphy in the South Sea shelf, to reconstruct the paleoenvironmental changes since LGM. To some limited range, we intend to report the geological characteristics of buried paleochannel deposits related with marine mineral placer through the case study of Sunda shelf, Indonesia.
At first year, we intended to examine the spacial distribution of paleo-Seomjin river channel, and to analyze seismic facies of channel fills, to measure characteristics (geometry, pattern, shape, direction, type) of channel boundary, based on 1,800 L-km of the preexisting sparker seismic profiles in 1983 – 1985 and 1,956 L-km of new sparker seismic records. Secondly, we seek to better understand the evolution of sequence stratigraphy and sedimentary history on the South Sea continental shelf based on seismic faces and cores with AMS 14C and OSL dating records.
As a results of first year, we recognized that the paleo-Seomjin river extended by the edge of shelf with max 120 km length and 0.9 – 5 km width. It showed dominant meandering and straight type in the inner shelf while changed to braided type in the outer shelf. The shape of channels were distinctly changed from U-, V- shapes in the inner shelf to trunk with terrace in the outer shelf. The size of channels were also deepen and widen seaward. The types of channel fills were divided into 5 types based on the internal reflectors and facies (Type I transparent to semi-transparent, Type II parallel to sub-parallel, Type III complex, Type IV inclined, Type V chaotic). Main seismic facies in the study area showed 7 types(Type I discontinuous stratified, Type II prograding, Type III transparent, Type IV acoustic turbidity, Type V acoustic basement, Type VI-1 stratified channel fills, Type VI-2 transparent channel fills).
The identified sedimentary units were divided into 5 Units (Unit S1 wedge form with indistinct to distinct internal reflectors, Unit S2 sand sheet or ridge with hummocky or chaotic reflector, Unit S3 basin/channel fills with transparent or weakly stratified reflector, Unit S4 sheet/drape with hummocky reflector, Unit S5 channel fill with relatively parallel reflector). All units belongs to transgressive system track(TST) except Unit S1(HST). The sedimentary facies assemblages are spatio-temporally characterized by 4 facies. In the outer shelf, shell lag are dominant, which were formed in the early Holocene transgression. When veneer sand sheet formed in the outer shelf during the middle Holocene, estuarine tidal mud deposits filled channels. Finally Holocene mud deposits occupied the inner shelf at the late Holocene highstand.
In this year as second step, we acquired high-resolution pseudo-3D seismic data in precision exploration area to examine Pre-LGM paleochannel geometry and some 2D seismic data along channel axis to verify the change of channel deposits. In the vertical profiles, 3 types of paleochannel which were incised in different time were found. PC-3 in lowermost part was characterized by 10-40 m in depth, 600-700 m in width, low sinuosity and 2 branch. The mouth of channel seems to be close to paleo-shoreline. The internal reflector show parallel to sub-parallel, and downlap to the channel flank. It seems to be formed in MIS 7-6.5. PC-02 has only one straight channel, and a range of 10–20 m in depth, 500-600 m in width. It is interpreted to be formed in MIS 6. PC-01 is the largest channel formed at LGM. It is characterized by 30-57m in depth, and 800-1800m in width. The reflector show chaotic and complex fill. The chanel was bifurcated in 130 m in water depth and directed southward.
Along PC-03, we got 30km long of sparker profile to show clearly the evolution of channel deposits. From the southern part of profile, internal reflector is chaotic indicating fluvial environment and changes to be paralleled indicating estuarine and finally complex as transgressive deposits. Meanwhile, the channel fill deposits of PC-01, 100 km-long are divided into 5 types based on the characteristics of reflector(Type I, II, III, IV, V). In the lowermost part of profile, fluvial lag deposit(Type V) showing chaotic reflector was found. Then types were changed Type IV & III, Type III & II, Type II, and Type I landward. It shows traditional channel deposits changed from fluvial to estuarine overlying transgressive deposits. What is important is that we found the lowstand deposit formed fluvial environment in the South Sea.
