Ⅳ. Results
"Jellyfish monitoring in Korean waters" provided information on the appearance and distribution of jellyfish including blooming A. aurita and N. nomurai in Korean waters. Density of N. nomurai was highest in 2005 and lowest in 2010. The mass appearance, >1ind./10,000㎡, was shortened to 1 or 2-year cycle. From the assumed origin area (Changjiang River Mouth), N. nomurai took three paths to come to Korean waters; i) Northern East China Sea (ECS) to middle Yellow Sea (YS)→southern YS→South Sea (SS), ii) middle ECS→Jeju Is.→SS→East Sea (ES), iii) southern ECS→Jeju is.→YS/SS→ES. The frequency of appearance of N. nomurai in inshore areas began to increase sharply since July until October. A. aurita, on the other hand, began to appear in the coastal area of the middle YS and eastern SS since the beginning of May. From the end of May, it spreaded across Korean coastal waters. From September, A. aurita began to disappear.
"Mechanism of jellyfish bloom" focused on the relationship between environmental factors (temperature, salinity and prey density) and population dynamics of jellyfish polyps, between marine pollution and the growth of jellyfish polyps, and on the impact of jellyfish blooms on fisheries resources. Probable causes of jellyfish blooms were also tackled in this study. The population of polyp of A. aurita increased proportional to the increase in temperature and prey density, but decreased with available surface area. Both A. aurita and N. nomurai mainly consumed zooplankton. In the case of N. nomurai, its prey size was equal to or less than 1mm. The filtering rate of jellyfish was higher than that of other zooplankton. In addition, jellyfish had significant impacts on the dynamic of prey. The respiration rate was considered to be a useful means in estimating the impact jellyfish poses to fisheries resources, with routinely surveyed data such as jellyfish biomass and temperature. Phytoplankton bloom of any kind seemed to contain the increase of jellyfish polyp. The main cause of A. aurita and N. nomurai might be eutrophication; Korean coastal area for A. aurita and Chinese Changjiang River Mouth for N. nomurai. Other causes such as overexploitation and climate change were likely to play minor roles.
"Countermeasures against jellyfish bloom" focused on how to reduce jellyfish population. Physical and chemical methods were developed. Underwater jet was the best method as it is effective, eco-friendly and cost-efficient. This method was tested in field and turned out to be very useful. NaOCl was tested and its effectiveness was highest among tested methods, but it was discarded because it did harm on other marine organisms and artificial materials. Filefish, known as a jellyfish eater, was tested for its effectiveness on controlling jellyfish population. Filefish ate both jellyfish polyps and adults, but its predation were low, if not none, depending on the satiation of that fish and on the prey items.
"Characterization of jellyfish venom" revealed that the venom was a protein-like extremely complicated material. Green tea was proposed as a first-aid material to relieve the pain in situ.
"Forecasting jellyfish appearance with model" was made for N. nomurai and A. aurita. Results of the model were in good agreement with field data and indicated the Cjhangjiang River Mouth as the seed place of N. nomurai.
"DNA diversity of Korean jellyfish" revealed unreported jellyfish in Korean waters, such as Chrysaora pacifica, Carybdea mora, and etc., and variation and difference in DNA of A. aurita along with season and area. N. nomurai seemed to be one species.
"Field ecological characteristics of jellyfish" concerned the swimming speed and vertical distribution of N. nomurai. N. nomurai swam relatively fast (0.6 times of Body size per second) and distributed in 10-40 m with diurnal vertical migration. On the other hand, A. aurita did not show any sign of diurnal vertical migration. Its biomass at Yeongsan River mouth varied with tide.
"Development of fishing gear to reduce fisheries damages" was done not only to separate jellyfish from catch in the net but also to cut jellyfish effectively through the net. A wedge-type jellyfish separating net separated 87.8% of N. nomurai. Its number and weight out of a total catch amounted to 68.0% and 67.8%, respectively. A cone-type jellyfish separating net separated 98.8% of N. nomurai. Its number and weight out of a total catch was 83.4% and 79.3%, respectively. Jellyfish cutting device which was installed into the net proved its effectiveness.
