This study is focused on the avifauna and bird ecology in Dokdo and Ulleungdo, which is located in East Sea, Korea. Dokdo and Ulleungdo is vlocanic islands and isolated from mainland, therefore it has very unique ecosystem and ecological values. As a bird habitat, we studied bird community, breeding biology of White Wagtails, vegetation monitoring and shore flatforms.
In Ulleungdo, we observed 14,533 birds of 111 species (or subspecies) in total. In Dokdo, a total of 261 birds of 36 species were observed. We recorded 6 endangered species (Von Schrenck's Bittern, Bean Goose, Eurasian Sparrowhawk, Peregrine Falcon, White-naped Crane, and Black Wood Pigeon) and 4 national monuments (Madarine Duck, Common Kestrel, Lesser Cuckoo, and Brown Hawk-Owl). First record of Oriental Skylark in Korea was made in Gwaneumdo, which is located in north-eastern part of Ulleungdo.
We found that the hybridization zone of Motacilla alba leucopsis and Motacilla alba lugens exists in Ulleungdo. The hybridization of the forms at the different stages of the evolutional isolation consists in revealing and explaining the mechanisms at the basis of microevolution and species formation. While the studies of hybrid zone are obviously valuable for evloutionary study, it's very rare case in the wild. We studied breeding biology of White Wagtailin Ulleungdo, and our data did not confirm the assumption of presence of ethological barriers. The survival rate and reproduction of the hybrids do not differ from those of parental forms. We analyzed genetic diversity and gene genealogy using the mitochondrial gene regions of White Wagtails in Ulleungdo. The results show that 4 mtDNA CO1 haplotype and 12 cyt-b haplotype were identified.
To analyse habitat of birds in Ulleungdo, we classfy the landform of the island, based on "Geomorphons" method which is the way compares the level with other cells against the criteria cell using DEM. Then we compare the result with other method such as topogrphic position index. As a result, most landforms are classifed into slopes including convex and concave slopes.
When we apply this landform classification to nests of the white wagtail, it is likely that they prefer valley, concave slope, and gravell beaches.
In Ulleungdo, a total of 71 plant taxa including 27 northern species and 44 southern species were identified as sensitive to climate. A result of the monitoring permanent plots, distribution types of topographic climax are entrusted to process of vegetation succession of Pinus parviflora and Tusga sieboldii forest. Types in the process of vegetation succession will be needed tending of forest to promote saplings growth and seedlings germination.
Especially in order to restore Tsuga sieboldii forest should be afforest and make forest gap because it is mid shade tolerant tree. It was considered that the composition of group mixture forest constituted Camellia japonica, Machius thunbergii, Neolitsea sericea and Acer okamotoanum, etc. will be able to restore native vegetation, after take the form of forest gap by strong thinning and pruning of Pinus thunbergii forest.
Dokdo's vegetation was classified into eight vegetation units with three communities, six groups and two subgroups. To observe changes in vegetation, permanent plots were installed in eleven places (eight in Dongdo and three in Seodo). As a result, the erosion and deposition of soil and humus affect the distribution of vegetation on Dokdo. It is determined that the vegetation of Dokdo is maintained if there is no significant disturbance.
Using cosmogenic 36Cl, we try to date the exposure ages of shore platforms along the islets of Dokdo and Ulleungdo. They occur at the base of cliffs on rocky coast and form by the retreat of such cliffs through wave action and weathering processes. The surface-exposure ages of the samples range back to ca. 2.4 ka in Ulleungdo and ca. 4.0 ka in Dokdo. Given the apparent age of the platform surface and the width of platform, the cliffs in both islands seem to have been eroded as fast as 0.04-0.05 m/y during the Holocene.
