Ⅱ. The Purpose and Necessity
In an effort to overcome energy depletion problems, there have been many ongoing researches over the past few decades for advanced lithium battery technologies. Nonetheless, the progress of improving the LIB energy density has been slow, and indeed, recently, the actual value of the energy density has been saturated, primarily due to the limited capacities of electrode materials.
To overcome the limitations of present electrode materials, lithium metal or lithium-alloying materials are considered an anode part and air electrode which uses oxygen in atmosphere is considered as a new cathode part. Both electrodes have new mechanisms for lithium storage which is completely different from previous lithium intercalation mechanism. Currently, fundamental research has been reported for this new type of battery system (Lithium/air system) based on the new lithium storage chemistry.
Current Lithium/air battery based on organic electrolyte shows significant problems such as electrolyte decomposition and low efficiency. To achieve high capacities and stable operation, therefore, development of solid electrolyte with superior property is inevitable.
Hence we focused on the necessity of research for solid electrolyte system which can fundamentally solve the problem. By adopting organic/solid/aqueous hybrid electrolyte system, electrolyte decomposition can be avoided and demerit from solid discharge product also can be overcome because the discharge product dissolve in the aqueous electrolyte in this system.
However, there can be new problem such as interface contamination between solid electrolyte and other battery component, accordingly, extensive research for this issue is highly required. Moreover, the lack of fundamental knowledge for operating mechanism of Lithium/air batteries is limiting the improvement of cell performance. We also focused on the fundamental issue, to figure out exact operating mechanism.
