Ⅱ. The Purpose and Necessity
In an effort to overcome energy depletion problems, there have been many ongoing researches over the past few decades for advanced lithium battery technologies. Nonetheless, the progress of improving the LIB energy density has been slow, and indeed, recently, the actual value of the energy density has been saturated, primarily due to the limited capacities of electrode materials. To overcome the limitations of present electrode materials, lithium metal or lithium-alloying materials are considered an anode part and air electrode which uses oxygen in atmosphere is considered as a new cathode part. Both electrodes have new mechanisms for lithium storage which is completely different from previous lithium intercalation mechanism. Currently, fundamental research has been reported for this new type of battery system (Lithium/air system) based on the new lithium storage chemistry.
Previously, metal/air 'primary' batteries have been partially commercialized but lithium/air 'secondary' battery systems are not still optimized due to severe technical bottlenecks to solve. For the successful commercialization, well-balanced developments of elementary technologies for lithium/air systems including 1) lithium metal anode, 2) solid electrolytes, 3) electrochemical stability of electrode/electrolyte interface, 4) oxide-based catalysts, and 5) air cathode is strongly needed.
In this project, Part 1 group exploited the technologies to stabilize lithium metal anode and designed the electrolyte for lithium/air battery system. Metallic lithium has been considered as an ideal anode material due to its ultimately high theoretical capacity (3860 mAh g-1) and the lowest reduction potential (-3.04 versus Standard Hydrogen Electrode (SHE)). However, big challenges were still remained prior to practical application; highly reactive nature and dendrite formation during electrodeposition. Likewise, its propensity would be accelerated in the lithium/air cell system. Therefore, the stabilization of lithium metal anode should be preferentially required toward successful commercialization of lithium/air battery.
