Parallel 3-dimesional nanoscale integration technology for nanostructure-based nanodevices by using filler layers was developed.
At the 1st stage, we developed a novel process for the alignment and bonding between NWs and metal electrodes by using thermo-compressive transfer printing. Controlled alignment and mechanically robust bonding between nanowires (NWs) and electrodes are essential requirements for reliable operation of functional NW-based electronic devices. By using a thermocompressive transfer printing process, robust electrical and mechanical contact between NWs and metal electrodes were can be realized. This method is believed to be very useful for the large-area fabrication of NW-based electrical devices with improved mechanical robustness, electrical contact resistance, and reliability
At the 2nd stage of research, the vertical integration of one dimensional(1D) nanostructures onto the two dimensional (2D) substrates was investigated due to its the potential to offer significant performance gains to flexible electronic devices due to high integration density, and large surface area.
We proposed a vertical transfer method for SiNWs grown on a Si substrate directly to the current-collecting electrode by using thermocompressive method without using a polymer adhesive. The vertical SiNWs have been transferred directly to a copper electrode coated with a thin Ag layer. When evaluated as an LIB anode, the transferred vertically aligned SiNWs showed a high specific capacity and excellent rate performance.
Rapid integration of SiNWs onto PET/Graphene substrate using ultrasonic vertical bonding process was developed. A low temperature bonding within a few seconds was achieved. The microscopic structure, and mechanical and electrical characteristics of the nanointerface are subsequently investigated, revealing that this creates a mechanically robust and electrically ohmic contact.
Transfer bonding of metal mesh pattern using UV-curable polymer adhesive and its application to transparent flexible electrode was investigated.
The AgNi nanomesh shows high long-term stability to oxidation, heat, and chemicals compared with that of pure Ag nanomesh, strong adhesion to a transparent substrate.
For local and selective bonding, we devoloped a novel nanomaterial bonding technology by localized thermal synthesis and integration. Local synthesis and out-of-plane bonding of various 1D nanostructures was achieved and electrical and mechanical characterization of nanowire-electrode junctions were done. Also, We aimed to develop a novel 3D, out-of-plane patterning, bonding and integration process for heterogeneous nanomaterials on microstructured and curved substrates by using EHD printing process.
EHD printing system were bulit and used for direct printing of nanomaterials.
Micropatterning and nanomaterial bonding on 3D microstructured/curved substrates were also performed.
These newly developed bonding methods are readily adaptable for diverse nanowires and substrates of both metal and polymer. Therefore they are considered as a valuable technique for integrating one-dimensional nano-structures onto the two-dimensional electrodes or substrates for nanosensors, flexible photovoltaics, energy storage, and water splitting systems.
