Purpose& contents
The purpose of this research was to establish a multiple fermentation process by using a bioelectrochemical system for maximizing biofuels (hydrogen, 2C ethanol and higher alcohol) recovery from algal biomass which mainly contains carbohydrates and proteins. The research focused on the development and optimization of biomass pretreatment and fermentation processes for the maximum utilization of carbohydrates and proteins in microalgal feedstock. We specifically put an emphasis on the fermentation of protein (in the 2nd stage) after the conventional carbohydrate fermentation (in the 1st stage) which led to a production of 5.233 g/L higher alcohols (including isobutanol, n-butanol, propanol and 3 methyl butanol). Transesterification of the leftover lipid fractions to biodiesel, Such serial fermentation process enhanced the maximum utilization of microalgal biomass and subsequent conversion to biofuels. The ultimate goal of this research achieved 46% biofuel conversion rate from microalgal feedstock employing a multiple continuous flow fermentation reactor system.
Result
Here we accomplished a new approach for the utilization of all microalgal constituent toward the production of sustainable and extractable fuels. Two sequential fermentation processes were performed in a serial manner, starting by carbohydrate fermentation for bioethanol production and followed by fermentation of leftover biomass (protein) for higher alcohol production. Fatty acids profile after protein fermentation was monitored to confirm the presence of potential fatty acids for biodiesel production. The ultimate goal of this research achieved 46% biofuel conversion rate from microalgal feedstock. this goal was achieved through:
● Enhancement of cost effective bioethanol production through various strategies via application of free and immobilized yeast cells.
● Repetitive production of ethanol for 7 cycles to eenhance the overall fermentation efficiency up for five consecutive cycles
● Establishment of holistic serial fermentation to utilize leftover biomass for higher alcohol production.
● Transesterification of the leftover lipid fractions to biodiesel
● Distillation and characterization of bioethanol was explored after carbohydrate fermentation. Amino acids profile before and after fermentations was evaluated.
Results
The carbohydrate fermentation resulted in 10.10 g/L production of bioethanol and 56% liberation of protein. Fermentation of the leftover biomass (protein by-products) showed a production of 0.98, 1.73, 1.20 and 1.19 g/L butanol, propanol, isobutanol and 3-methyl butanol, respectively. Palmitic acid and γ-linolenic acid, oleic acid were major forms, accounting for 54.53, 14.03 and 11.97% of total fatty acid, respectively. This study demonstrated that 46% of microalgal biomass was converted into energy in a form of 27% bioethanol, 14% higher alcohols and 5% biodiesel. Such holistic serial fermentation process would maximum utilization of biomasses and subsequent conversion to biofuel.
Expected Contribution
Development a cost-effective pretreatment methods achieving maximum bioavailability.
Utilization of maximum protion of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids in biomasses for biofuel production.
Development of new technologies to enhance bioenergy yield in terms of ethanol and higher alcohol through microalgal fermentations.
Identification of cost effective route to produce biofuel with high efficiency.
Leftover biomass (protein and lipid) from first phase of fermentation process completely utilized through fungal fermentations for biobutanol production.
