Ⅳ. Results of research and development work
Yttria doped barium zirconate (BZY) electrolytes are chosen for the development of this study based on high bulk proton conductivity and phase stability against CO₂. However, BZY materials have poor sinterabillity and low grain boundary conductivity. In order to improve sinterability of BZY with proton conductivity, hence, nanopowder synthesis techniques such as combustion, hydrothermal, and co-precipitation method. However, samples prepared by nanopowder synthesis techniques show low proton conductivity in the intermediate temperature range, even though these methods are beneficial for enhancing for BZY density at lower temperature. Thus, more work needs to improve conductivity of BZY through optimization of ceramic processing such as pH value and organic solvents. Another strategy to improve sinterablity of BZY, sintering aids (such as CuO, NiO, ZnO, etc) add and sintered at 1450ºC for 8 h. Among these, CuO shows the most effective one in conductivity and sinterability. In addition, 3 mol% PdO-doped BZY electrolyte shows higher conductivity than that of BZY. This might be due to the high affinity of PdO with Hydrogen and interfacial effects by extra defects with dispersed Pd.
Dual phase ceria-based (Li/Na)₂CO₃ composite electrolytes are tested and shows higher conductivity than pure ceria-based electrolytes in the intermediate temperature. Hence, BZY and carbonates are mixed to enhance the densification and proton conductivity. Under various gas atmospheres, composite BZY/carbonate electrolytes have 1-2 orders in magnitude higher proton conductivity than pure BZY. This result is demonstrated by measuring AC and DC conductivity. Until now, however, transport mechanism of co-ionic phenomenon in composite electrolytes cannot be explained experimentally until now. We will clearly demonstrate through the partial conductivity measurements in oxygen and hydrogen concentration cell.
A number of cerium pyrophosphate-based electrolytes (Ce1-xMxP₂O7, M = Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba; x = 0.05, 0.1 or 0.2) are synthesized by digesting appropriate precursors with phosphoric acid. Phase composition and microstructure of metal pyrophosphates are characterized by XRD and SEM, respectively. The variation of electrical conductivity of Ce1-xSrxP₂O7 (x=0.05, 0.1 and 0.2) with temperature are studied in dry and humid air atmosphere. The doping of Sr2+ in CeP₂O7 leads to increase in electrical conductivity in dry and humid air atmosphere. However, in dry air the electrical conductivity of doped CeP₂O7 is <10-8 S/cm at the temperatures <180ºC. In dry air, the highest conductivity are observed for Ce0.9Sr0.1P₂O7 to be 4.3x10-6 -6 S/cm at 430ºC. On the other hand, in humid air conditions, there is a drastic increase in electrical conductivity of material even at the temperatures <180 ºC. The humidification of Ce1-xSrxP₂O7 is a slow process and once the sample is stabilized in humidified air atmosphere, the variation of ionic conductivity with temperature depends on the combined effect of ionic mobility and availability of charge carriers in 90-190ºC. The electrical conductivity decreases rapidly beyond the temperatures >190 ºC which can be associated with the phase transition in cerium pyrophosphate which possibly affects the capacity of the material to retain water species. The electrical conductivity shows dependence on dopant concentration and pH2O. Among various Ce1-xSrxP₂O7 samples, Ce0.9Sr0.1P₂O7 shows the highest conductivity in humid air, with a maximum conductivity of 6.3x10-3 S/cm at 90ºC and pH2O=0.12 atm. The conductivity of Ce0.9Sr0.1P₂O7 is 3.5x10-3 S/cm at 190ºC and pH₂O=0.12 atm. XRD data of Ce0.9Sr0.1P₂O7 samples keeps at different temperature and humidity conditions confirms the stability of Ce1-xSrxP₂O7 in humid conditions at 200 ºC.
The electrical conductivity of M2+- doped CeP₂O7 is 10-8 S/cm in dry conditions at the temperatures <175 ºC, but it increases significantly in humid condition (pH₂O=0.12 atm) and at 90ºC it reaches 7.6x10-3 and 4.7x10-3 S/cm for Ce0.9Mg0.1P₂O7 and Ce0.9Ba0.1P₂O7 respectively. The effect of various dopants on the electrical conductivity was analyzed and the conductivity is found be in Mg > Ca > Sr > Ba order, both in unhumidified and humid air atmospheres. The variation in conductivity with different dopant cations is explained on the basis of dopant solubility and polarizability of the dopant cation. The effect of sintering temperature on the microstructure and electrical conductivity is also studied. Ce0.9Mg0.1P₂O7 sample sintered at 450 ºC shows maximum conductivity at 90 ºC whereas those sintered at 650 and 750 ºC show maximum conductivity at 150 ºC. The electrical conductivity of samples sintered at 650 and 750 ºC was lower than that of 450ºC sintered sample due to the reduction in amount of pyrophosphate phase during sintering.
