■ Purpose & contents
Purpose of Study: The main objective is to develop a high potential electric power generator by mimicking an electric eel, which can produce up to 600 V potential. The mechanism for this high potential generation is by moving ions into and out of highly selective channels along the membrane, producing an ionic gradient. In this study, several tens of voltage will be realized by optimization of nanoscale nonlinear electerokinetics and arranging more than 200 electric cells serially in microchannel.
1) Research Objectives and Contents of the 1st year - Development of a single electrocyte cell mimicking platform and analysis of nanoscale electrical characteristics
2) Research objectives and contents of the second year - Maximization of energy conversion efficiency through nonlinear nano-scale electrokinetic research and microfluidic control
3) Third Year Research Objective and Contents - Development of micro high voltage generator by serial connection of more than 200 cells using multilayered microchannel
■ Result
According to this research plan, in the first year, we developed a single electrocyte cell mimicking platform by self-assembling the nanoparticles into desired positions and shapes in the microchannel and successfully producing ion selective membranes. The electrical characteristics of nanoscale depending on size and type of nanoparticle, the shape of microchannel were analyzed by ion depletion layer and I-V measurement. In the second year, a high-performance ionic diode with a dramatically increased ionic current than the conventional ionic diode was realized. The electrical characteristics and ion behavior were quantitatively analyzed by fluorescence. In addition, when the ionic diode was installed, the efficiency of a single electrocyte cell inspired micro energy generator was quantitatively analyzed and a high open circuit voltage of about 100 mV exceeding the target value of 85 mV was obtained. In the third year, a multi-cell high voltage generator was realized by connecting a cation or anion exchange membrane, consisting of charged nanoparticles in series with a positively or a negative surface charge using a multilayered microchannel. In this study, full cell stacked with 1, 3, and 5 cells were fabricated and quantitatively compared open circuit voltage, short circuit current and power according to various concentration gradient.
■ Expected Contibution
In order to develop future devices such as human implantable medical devices and micro / nano robots, it is necessary to study the energy supply sources for these devices. In this study, it is possible to realize the development of such a future device if a high voltage can be generated in a small volume, and furthermore, energy can be generated by utilizing this device through the sweat of the human body, blood, and urine. In addition, modeling and analysis for nonlinear nanoscale electrokinetics can contribute to maximizing the performance of the concentration generation power using the future clean energy energy of seawater / fresh water.
