Purpose& contents
The objective of this study is to develop key materials for next-generation lithium-sulfur batteries, which can be achieved by designing and synthesizing sulfur composite cathodes, lithium anode for suppressing dendrite formation, high-capacity silicon alloy and noble electrolyte materials. The development of new battery materials based on the fundamental understanding of electrochemical behavior in lithium-sulfur batteries will find the paths toward advanced lithium battery technologies.
Result
The development and electrochemical characterization of materials (cathode, electrolyte, and anode) of the lithium-sulfur battery were performed in this project, and further analysis and control of various interfacial reactions were carried out. In the case of the cathode, the core-shell structured material which physically surrounds the sulfur with carbon was synthesized from natural materials and its electrochemical performance was evaluated. In addition, by combining graphene and sulfur, the electrical conductivity was enhanced and lithium polysulfide dissolution was suppressed. In the case of the electrolyte, a solid electrolyte having a high ion conductivity was prepared by blending an inorganic solid electrolyte which blocks the diffusion of lithium polysulfide and allows only lithium ions to pass therethrough. A cross-linked gel polymer electrolyte, which has higher lithium ion conductivity than solid electrolyte at room temperature and can effectively inhibit the diffusion of lithium polysulfide, was synthesized and applied to a lithium-sulfur battery. In the case of the anode, a negative electrode material having excellent performance is developed by coating a conductive protective film on lithium or introducing hetero-doped graphene into the interlayer film between the separator and lithium to stabilize the lithium surface and suppressing dendrite growth. Silicon alloys with high capacity were synthesized to prevent the volume expansion of silicon and the cycling stability was improved by proper design of binder materials.
Expected Contribution
The materials for lithium-sulfur battery will further optimized for industrial applications. Furthermore, we will compare the various factors affecting battery performance and propose an optimum adsorbent material. Through these additional studies, we intend to cultivate specialists who can lead industry and academia for the next three years. It is anticipated that the trained experts will be able to advance into various secondary battery fields and play a major role in securing domestic industrial competitiveness and national technology competitiveness. In addition, we will seek to find a method that can be used as a useful form in the lithium secondary battery that is currently being used as well as the next generation secondary battery through collaboration with industries interested in the developed material technology.
