Purpose
The main objectives of this CRI project are to investigate the basic biophysics of unknown biofluid phenomena using advanced quantitative flow visualization (F/V) techniques and to develop creative biomimic technologies based on the revealed biophysics of the biofluid flows in order to apply them to biomedical and fluid-engineering fields. This study will be carried out by interdisciplinary cooperative researches between fluid mechanics, life science and biomedical research teams.
contents
Advanced F/V techniques for observing opaque biofluid phenomena in living creatures will be developed and applied to reveal underlying biophysics under in vivo condition. Based on these revealed biophysical mechanisms, creative bio-mimetic technologies will be developed. Biophysical/dynamical analyses on the biofluid phenomena will provide detailed information on their biophysical mechanisms. The outbreak and progress of circulatory vascular diseases will be investigated by measuring quantitative velocity field information of blood flows in disease models by using biocompatible F/V techniques with enhanced spatial and temporal resolutions. In addition, in-depth dynamic analyses on biofluid flows in insects and plants will be performed. For example, blood-sucking phenomena of female mosquitoes, sap transport in xylem vessels of vascular plants, and mass transport through membranes will be directly observed using synchrotron X-ray imaging and holographic microscopy techniques. As a result, the underlying mechanisms of biofluid phenomena will be revealed and the corresponding creative biomimetic technologies will be developed. These developed biomimetic technologies would resolve existing fluid-dynamic problems encountered in BT/NT/ET research fields. The innovative core technologies developed in this study will ultimately contribute to socioeconomics of future society and improve the quality of human life.
Developement results
Advanced F/V techniques specialized for biofluid flows were developed and the spatial-temporal resolutions were enhanced. A protocol of in vitro model fabrication based on 3D printing technology was established and invasive/non-invasive F/V techniques such as synchrotron X-ray imaging and holographic microscopy were employed to measure biological flows in nature. For example, blood flow in a human body, sap flow in xylem vessels of plants and liquid-uptakes of various insects were quantitatively visualized and their underlying mechanisms were revealed in detail. In addition, high-efficiency biomimetic microfluidic devices are developed based on these revealed biophysical mechanisms.
Expected Contribution
The developed world-class flow visualization techniques would contribute to the revealing of underlying biophysical mechanisms of biofluid flow phenomena. These results will be directly applied to develop creative bio-mimetic technologies for resolving various flow-related problems in BT/NT/ET research fields. In addition, the biomimetic technologies inspired by the optimized structures and functions of natural biosystems enable to develop high-efficiency fluid-mechanical devices. The developed creative biomimetic technologies will become core technologies in the advances of future biotechnology and biomedical engineering fields, and they contribute to the development of new industries.
