Purpose& contents
• Despite the continued demand for granular adsorbents in industries, most studies have focused on the development of powdered adsorbents for the treatment of hazardous metals. Therefore, this research aims to develop various approaches and core technologies (CTs) being able to give high-performance to adsorbents. In order to achieve this goal, we have sequentially carried out the feasibility of high-performance by CTs, manufacture and optimization of high-performance immobilized adsorbents using the selected CT, and evaluation of their versatility and application.
Result
< Major research results in the 1st year >
• C. glutamicum and E. coli biomass were selected and secured.
• Matrix, cross-linking agent, and polymer material were selected.
• As a result of evaluating the adsorption characteristics of Pd(II) on the adsorbent prepared by CT1, the maximum sorption capacity increased 6.7 times. Desorption efficiency of over 95% and reuse of adsorbent were also possible. Thus, CT1 was selected for the study of the next year.
< Major research results in the 2nd year >
• We have designed the manufacturing system of the immobilized adsorbents that can control the thickness of adsorbents and adjust the spinning speed.
• In order to derive optimal manufacturing conditions by using RSM, the contents of biomass, PEI and GA were selected as the main variables and then optimization experiments were performed by the central composite design (CCD) method.
• Derived optimal conditions: 4.145 g biomass, 1.104 g PEI, and 3.91 ㎕ GA.
< Major research results in the 3rd year >
• As a result of the adsorption performance test for heavy metals (Pd(II), Cd(II)) and precious metals (Pt(IV), Pd(II)), heavy metals were not adsorbed in all pH ranges.
• The maximum uptakes for Pt(IV) and Pd(II) were estimated to be 235 mg/L and 271mg/L, respectively.
• The results of the adsorption-desorption process for precious metals were derived under the column process.
• Using the desorption technology, the recovery efficiency for precious metals was achieved to be 98%, which was higher than the reference value.
• Using the sorption-reduction fusion technology, the recovery efficiency for Pd(II) was achieved to be 99%, which was higher than the reference value.
Expected contribution
• The adsorbent developed in this study was evaluated to have a slightly lower or similar sorption performance compared with a cation-exchange resin. So, we are planning to further study developing powerful adsorbents through additional surface modifications.
• A follow-up study using the main findings derived from this study will be carried out to develop adsorbents for the removal of cationic heavy metals.
