Purpose
The purpose of this research is to develop super-accurate first-principles electronic structure calculational methods considering many-body effects and spin-mediated interactions in electron systems, and to apply them for studying atomic structures, electronic structures, spin structures, electronic conductions, and superconducting properties in electronic materials including nanostructures and high-temperature superconductors. Electronic properties in nanoscale electronic materials including topological insulators, semiconductor nanostructures, and nanometer-thick metal oxides will be investigated, and thereby fundamental knowledge for atom-level design capability of nanostructures will be established. Electronic structures and spin structures in high-temperature superconductors will be investigated, and on the basis, we will discover microscopic origins of unconventional superconducting energy-gap symmetry and high superconducting transition temperatures.
contents
In this research, we will develop super-accurate first-principles calculational methods for physical properties of solids and nanostructures, considering many-body effects and spin-mediated interactions in electron systems, and will investigate atomic structures, electronic structures, spin structures, electronic conductions, and superconducting properties in electronic materials including topological insulators, semiconductor nanostructures, and high-temperature superconductors. We will develop super-accurate first-principles methods for electronic conduction in semiconducting and insulating nanostructures by combining the GW approximation to quasiparticle self-energy to describe the energy band gap and the scattering-state method for electronic conduction in nanostructure. Using the methods, we will investigate electronic conduction in semiconducting nanowires and insulating effects of nanometer-thick metal oxides. Electronic properties of nanoscale electronic materials will be accumulated by super-accurate calculational method, and thereby atom-level design capability will be established. We will develop super-accurate first-principles calculational methods for electronic structures in metal oxides and unconventional metals where metallicity is substantially degraded by many-body effects in electron system. Using the methods, we will investigate electronic structures and spin structures in high-temperature superconducting materials. On the basis of understanding of these physical properties, we will discover miroscopic origins of unconventional superconducting energy-gap symmetry and superconducting transition temperatures in unconventional superconductors including iron-based and copper-oxide-based superconductors.
Developement results
We studied electronic structures and transport properties of semiconductor nanowires and nanomaterials, developed methods for calculating electronic structures and transport properties of oxide materials, and obtained superconducting transition temperatures and superconducting energy gaps of overdoped copper oxide superconductors. We published 11 papers at SCI journals including one paper in Science, and gave 32 presentations at international conferences and workshops and 30 presentations at domestic conferences and workshops.
Expected Contribution
Super-accurate calculational studies on electronic conduction in semiconductor and oxide nanostructures considering many-body effects will result in world-best cutting-edge progress in solid-state physics, and accumulation of such knowledge will stimulate industrial development of semiconductor-based nano-devices. Super-accurate calculational studies on electronic structures, spin structures, and spin excitation states in high-temperature superconductors will result in world-leading breakthrough in understanding of unconventional superconductivity and eventually reveal the microscopic origins of high-temperature superconductivity.
