● Purpose & Contents
The purpose of R&D is to develop the practical concrete surface preparation technology to produce artistic or aesthetic appearances so as to make concrete structures in the city look more eco-friendly and extend the service life of concrete structures through the means to prevent deterioration. For such purposes, a customized 3D printer that can produce form liner and protective skins for concrete with fabrication precision of 20μm is to be developed.
Various design patterns to promote eco-friendly aesthetic appearances are developed and the material selection and structural design for producing the form liner for concrete surface preparation and production of protective skins are carried out in order to develop the advanced concrete surface preparation technology by combining technologies in construction, formative art design,3D printer and IT fields. In addition, the customized 3D printer which can produce a large member is developed, and the concrete form liner and protective skins with artistic and aesthetically pleasing appearances are produced using the developed 3D printer and applied to actual concrete walls for experimental purposes, and their functionality, aesthetics and practical value are verified comprehensively.
● Results
In comparison to the previous concrete surface preparation technology, it is expected that the concrete form liner and protective skins can be produced economically using the 3D printer which is gaining attention as an innovative tool in manufacturing industry, and provide creative technological results to create concrete forms artistically in an economic manner. Since the customized 3D printer is developed in this project to enable the economical production of large members for building structures, it is expected that the 3D printer production technology developed in this project will bring technological results that can be applied in the production of large objects in various fields in the future.
Since this technology is intended to develop a superior design with an aesthetically pleasing appearance by considering the purpose of concrete structures, regional characteristics, surrounding environments and users, it is expected that such software technology will bring about technological ripple effects that can be applied in relevant fields in various forms.
Since it is possible to create concrete surfaces with aesthetically pleasing appearances effectively by mounting the form liner produced through 3D printing at a low cost, it has a higher economic feasibility in comparison to the previous technology that uses expensive engraved steel forms. Also, if the protective skins are applied when constructing concrete structures such as an externally exposed structure or waterside structure (harbor structure, pier,sewage disposal structure, sewerage pipes, etc.), deterioration of the concrete or direct damage caused by erosion and scouring can be prevented in advance, enabling the extension of the service life of the structure and reducing maintenance costs to achieve superior economic performance.
Since technical manpower for designing, producing and operating manufacturing equipment and construction is required to vitalize the application of 3D printing to industrial fields, it is expected that the ripple effects will help create a new labor market for professional manpower. If research students in universities are stimulated to learn about the knowledge in this new field through this study, it is also expected that there will be education effects in cultivating the professional manpower to lead this new market.
If the exterior of public facilities and buildings in the city and on the roadside create beautiful and artistic views that harmonize well with the surrounding landscape, it is expected that the general psychological wellbeing will also be promoted. And if traffic signs or public signs for the public facilities on the roadside are installed additionally, the social ripple effects to contribute to traffic safety can anticipated also.
● Expected Contribution
If eco-friendly aesthetic appearances are created on concrete structures among various infrastructure or building structures and the protective skins are installed, the deterioration of concrete can be reduced so that it can be utilized widely for such purposes. Since the previously existing form can be used when concrete structure is constructed, it is convenient to apply it to this field and it can be used for concrete structures in various shapes and for various purposes.
Concrete surfaces with artistic appearances that are designed with natural and artificial objects that can harmonize with the surrounding landscape can create a beautiful and eco-friendly atmosphere. In addition, the central government, local governments and building owners will become the consumers for such technology and the active utilization of such technology by these customers is expected. Especially, in consideration of the fact that the protection of the landscape was legislated in the Landscape Act amended in 2013, it is expected that the demands for the creation of concrete surfaces with artistic merit will increase rapidly. Furthermore, formative art designs containing advertisement contents to promote regional characteristics and the characteristics of local governments can be included so that it can be utilized also in the publicity and advertisement fields.
Through the development of the customized 3D printer which can produce large construction members efficiently, future source technology that can produce various non-structural and structural members for construction without size limitation is secured. If the application of this technology using the 3D printer to the non-structural members is successful, it can be widely applied to the production of structural members. A new industry where the developed customized 3D printer technology can be applied to the production of large structural and non-structural products used in plants, automobiles,machinery and vessels will be created.
If the domestic application of technology developed in this project is achieved successfully, it can be also applied to the huge scale overseas construction market immediately, facilitating the opening of a channel for technology export.
