Purpose & Contents
This project aims to prepare an effective management plan for the increasing antibiotic resistance in the domestic flow-through aquaculture water systems by performing systematic and intensive monotoring of the aquacultre effluent qualities (for selected antibiotics, antibiotic resistant bacteria and resistance genes) and developing an cost-effective water treatment technology against these emerging contaminants.
Results
Various water quality parameters of the selected domestric flow-through fish (flatfish) farm waters (total 24 covering South Jeolla province and Jeju island) were monitored for three years in terms of basic water qualties (SPM, TSS, COD, TP, TN, NH3-N), antibiotics (oxytetracycline-OTC, amoxcillin-AMX, fluorofenicol-FLO, and oxonilic acid-OXO), fish pathogen (Vibrio), antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB, resistant against OTC and AMX), antibiotic resistance genes (25 ARGs including tetB, tetD).
As results of the monitoring program, it is concluded that the application of antibiotics in domestic flatfish farms is frequent (antibiotics are found in aquacultre waters even in winter period, when the farming activity is known to be low), and the level of antibiotic contamination is considered to be significant. Overall, continuing systematic and comprehensive program is highly recommended in order to be able to make accurate risk assessment for the antibiotic resistance in the aquaculture environment.
The efficiency of various water treatment technologies based on oxidative and photochemical reactions were assessed in a systematic manner to inactivate and eliminate antibiotics, ARB and ARGs present in aquaculture effluents. A process train comprised of disc filter-chlorine-UV processes was selected as the most cost-effective treatment technology for the aquaculture effluent based on the high removal efficiency, maturity of the technology, and the field applicability.
A pilot treatment system (capacity of 1000 m3/day) using disc filter-chlorine-UV process was designed, constructed, and tested in the selected aquaculture farm facility. The pilot treatment operation was stable and successful during the onsite tests and could achieve more than 90% of OTC and AMX (target antibiotics), 99.99% inactivation of ARBs, and 99% - 99.9% abatement of the selected ARGs (tetB and tetD ). Further research need was found for enhancing removal efficiency of particles and suspended solids in the pretreatment process as the efficiency of UV disinfection was significantly decreased in the aquaculture effluent matrices containing high levels of suspended solids (e.g., after fish feeding).
Expected Contribution
Enabling risk assessment for the antibiotic resistance contamination of domestic flatfish aquacultrue facilities by providing relevant monitoring data
Developing advanced analytical methods for the antibiotic resistance related contaminants in seawater matrices
Developing applicable, cost-effective water treatment technology to control ARB and ARGs in aquaculture waters
Human resource training in the area of sustainable aquacultre system and management of antibiotic resistance contamination
