i. Modeling of the thermal dynamics of the building using the construction plan and material properties.
▪ Resistance-Capacitance (RC) model of an electrical circuit analogy is taken to model the thermal circuit of a connected rooms
▪ Heat Transfer Process
1. Conduction (함수)
2. Convection (함수)
3. Radiation
Function of :
✔ Altitude
✔ Azimuth angle
✔ Orientation of the wall/window
✔ Day/time of the year
✔ Outside weather and sky condition
▪ The resistance and capacitance of the thermal circuit will be a function of the walls and air specific heat capacity and their physical dimensions.
Analogy
Temperature or thermal potential (T) → voltage or potential difference (V or E)
Thermal resistance→Electrical Resistance (R)
Heat flow→ current flow (i)
▪ The thermal dynamic equation expressed as a state space equations simple enough to capture the dynamics and accurate enough to implement control schemes.
▪ The thermal radiation on the building is taken typical of KAIST altitude and longitude to represent in the state space of the model.
ii. Developing a Model Predictive control (MPC) of HVAC system to balance competing demands for occupant comfort and reducing energy consumption.
▪ Model predictive control is suitable for slowly changing dynamics.
▪ Defining control objective function considering energy saving and occupant comfort.
▪ Competing demands, i.e. occupant and energy are modeled as a cost function in an MPC control systems.
▪ Temperature variation and actuator capacity constraints are directly incorporated as a constraint in the MPC scheme.
▪ Basic control strategy
• Formulate the HVAC control as an optimization problem with constraints of system dynamics, actuator capacity and temperature( room temperature ) allowed variations.
• At time k, use knowledge of the system model to design an input sequence u(k|k), u(k + 1|k), u(k + 2|k), u(k + 3|k), . . . , u(k + N|k) over a finite horizon N from the current state x(k)
• Implement a fraction of that input sequence, usually just first step. Repeat for time k + 1 at state x(k + 1)
iii. Define occupant models and uncertainties in building thermal dynamics.
▪ For efficient energy management of HVAC system, knowledge of the occupant behavior is paramount.
▪ To balance the competing demands of occupant comfort and low energy consumption, the controller will reduce space conditioning during vacancy.
▪ Statistic occupancy model will track length of occupancy and vacancy.
▪ The occupancy prediction will be imbedded directly to the MPC cost function.
▪ Occupants biologically emits heat and electrical equipment used in the room generates heat in the room. It will be another dynamic add to the room RC model accounted as an external disturbance.
3. Research Results
A. Core Technologies in Campus EMS and Smart Grid Communication Infrastructure
i. Community-Level Electric Vehicle Charging Coordination System
▪ Object 1: Peak load reduction
✔ Fig. A.1 shows the EV charging load profiles of the proposed centralized (top) and decentralized (bottom) coordination schemes, respectively, with the objective of peak load reduction when Climit = 200 EVs and Nslot = 1.
✔ Since the COC determines the set of charging-scheduled EVs on every time slot, the proposed centralized coordination scheme shows perfect peak load management to satisfy the target power limit.
✔ Even though there are some power fluctuations in the EV load profile of the proposed decentralized coordination scheme, it also reduces the peak load down to the target power limit.
✔ On the other hand, the ASAP scheme and the random distribution scheme show peak EV charging loads at 19 o’clock and 1 o’clock of the next day, respectively, and they cannot satisfy the target power limit.
▪ Object 2: Minimization of community-level charging cost
✔ According to the time-varying charging capacity limit, Fig. A.2 shows the EV charging load profiles of the proposed centralized (top) and decentralized (bottom) coordination schemes with the TOU electricity prices.
✔ The proposed centralized and decentralized coordination schemes significantly restrict EV charging load during the peak load period (16 : 00 ~ 21 : 00) in order to minimize the total EV charging cost, and the restricted EV charging load is shifted to the mid-load period and the off-peak load period.
ii. Load Forecasting Using the Power Consumption of Electric Appliances
B. Pattern Based Building Energy System Model
i. Found components that the huge amount of energy can be saved through the life cycle cost by different building types.
ii. Simulating energy consumption from administration building and dormitory buildings in KAIST campus, and compared them to their life cycle cost. With the results, the components that the huge amount of energy can be saved per 100,000 won were found. The results can show which components are able to save how much energy.
C. Energy efficient operation of HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) system for campus building
i. Modeling of the thermal dynamics of the building using the construction plan and material properties.
▪ RC thermal model of a room 3332 in Mechanical building is developed as it is seen in the Fig. C.1.
▪ It accounts the heat radiance the building receives through the windows, the air conditioning systems, heat generated in the room by occupants and electrical appliances used in the room.
ii. Developing a Model Predictive control (MPC) of HVAC system to balance competing demands for occupant comfort and reducing energy consumption.
▪ The MPC cost function reflecting the occupant comfort and energy consumption of HVAC system modeled as given in the following equation. The limitations of the actuators, allowed temperature variation in the room and the governing system dynamics with its disturbance are stated as a constraint to the optimization problem description of the MPC.
(함수)
ii. The occupancy model embedded directly in the cost function
(함수)
iv. Taking the other rooms temperature and the sun radiation as a system disturbance the MPC control optimize the conflicting interest of keeping the occupant comfort and reducing the energy consumed by the HVAC system. The reference temp set at 22℃. The MPC controller managed to keep the comfort temperature while minimizing the energy used in HVAC.
