2.2 Atomistic simulation study of water flow between graphene oxide membranes 4
Multilayered graphene oxide(GO) membranes have emerged as a novel filtering materials because of their outstanding ion selectivity and efficiency. However, physics and properties of their water permeability remain chiefly unknown. To discover dependence of water permeability on oxygen debris(OD) and functional group, we constructed various GO membrane systems and simulated the water permeation through the GO membranes focusing oxygen debris and kinds of functional group.
Our simulations showed that the flux of water between GO membranes is largely inhibited by oxygen debris and functional groups and revealed that the size exclusion of functional groups becomes dominant inhibiting factor while water-binding interaction effect of these is weakening by increasing external pressure. Our results provide new physical features for understanding interlayer channels in multilayered GO membranes.
2.3 Enhanced performance in capacitive deionization via introduction of spandex binder
In the recent years, Capacitive deionization (CDI) has been receiving significant amount of attention as an energy-efficient and environment-friendly desalination technology due to its low electrode potential (1-1.5 V) and high recovery rate (>90%). The conventional CDI is composed of porous carbon electrodes, which establishes its electrochemical basis on an electric double-layer (EDL) capacitor. During the charging-step, the counter-ions from inlet water are attracted to the electrode surfaces in accordance with an applied electric field and contribute to the EDL formation. On the contrary, during the discharging-step, the counter-ions are come off from the EDL into the inlet water. As the CDI repeats the charging- and discharging-step, the desalination process of saline water (e.g. brackish water, seawater, etc.) operates. However, these porous carbon electrodes of the conventional CDI systems suffer from performance loss associated with its low wettability as well as interfacial resistance. The porous carbon electrode exhibits low hydrophilicity and therefore lacks wettability to saline water during the desalination process. Herein, our group firstly introduce a Spandex polymer with relatively low molecular weight, around 90,000, as a binder for CDI electrodes. 5
Spandex has hydrophilic functional group such as urea and urethane, and also binds with current collector by hydrogen bond interaction which is stronger than that of Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) binder by van der Waals interaction, therefore it exhibited superiority in wettability of water condition, adhesion of electrode to a carbon current collector, and salt removal capacity compared to those of the commercial PVDF binder.
For the CDI electrode preparation, slurry was fabricated by dispersing 90 wt% Activated carbon (AC), 10 wt% binder (Spandex or PVDF) in N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) solvent. The slurry was cast on carbon paper (TGP-H-090 with 20% wet-proofing Toray, Japan) current collectors using the doctor blade method and then dried in a vacuum oven at 60 ℃ over-night. Desalination tests were carried out using the CDI module shown in the figure below. In the charging-step (ion-capturing step), the ions in the influent were captured by the potential (1.2 V) applied between both electrodes using potentiostat (WBCS3000; Wonatech, Republic of Korea). The effluent concentration was measured by ion conductivity meter (Uni Cond 2-E; METTLER TOLEDO, USA). The 500 ppm NaCl aqueous solution was used as saline water.
The effect of Spandex binder was more pronounced in the desalination characterizations. The symmetric AC based CDI cells made up of two different binders were tested under the constant voltage (1.2 V) mode. While both Spandex and PVDF based electrodes lowered the salinity of the influent water as soon as the voltage was applied, saline water concentration was more reduced in the Spandex based electrode compared to the PVDF based electrode owing to the hydrophilic surface and lower interfacial resistance. Remarkably, because the influent water continuously flow in the desalination system, the instantaneous wetting plays a key role in maximizing the desalination performance. As a result, the salt removal capacity in the Spandex based electrode (2.31 mg g-1) was enhanced by 32% compared to the PVDF based electrode (1.75 mg g-1).
In conclusion, we firstly introduced the Spandex as a binder for CDI desalination system. The Spandex based electrode exhibited superior electrochemical performance in terms of high salt removal capacity and low interfacial resistance. As a result of various analyses, it has been found that as the Spandex bears urea and urethane in a hard domain, it improves the wettability of the electrode surface leading to low interfacial resistance and the adhesion ability between the electrode and current collector. Thus, the Spandex should be a promising candidate as a binder material for CDI desalination system.
