□ Purpose
- Final goal of this international collaboration between Korea and France is to develop novel synthesis methods and reaction ststems to enhance both reactivity and longevity of Fe nanoparticles by building on the complementary expertise of the two research teams. The steps required to achieve the goal of the proposed research are a set of technical tasks related to i) development of novel synthesis methods for solid wastes (coal ash and red mud) supported NZVI (Korean team), ii) development of novel synthesis methods for ZnO-Fe (French tema), iii) characterization of Fe catalysts by a variety of surface analysis techniques (Korean and French teams), iv) assessment of reactivity of Fe nanoparticles and impact of supports (Korean and French teams), v) development of innovative Fe technologies to eliminate toxic contaminants in natural and engineered environments (Korean and French teams).
□ Contents
- Korean team has strong expertise in synthesis of supported nanostructures using Fe materials. Therefore, we i) developed the pretreatment methods for homogenizing the solid wastes, ii) developed novel synthesis methods for incorporting NZVI on the surface of pre-treated solid wastes, iii) characterized the synthesized materials, 4) applid the materials for removal of environmental contaminants (e.g., p-nitrophenol and methyl orange) by reductive and oxidative degradation, and iv) investigated the removal mechanism using a variety of surface analysis (i.e., SEM-EDX, TEM-SAED, XRD, XPS, ATR-FTIR, BET, AFM…).
- French team will develop novel ZnO+Fe nanoparticles that can be used to decontaminate, wastewaters, soils and groundwater polluted with organic and inorganic compounds. In particular, this study determined the best synthesis rotues and selecting the most promising particles and the best reactive ones for soil and water treatment. The results in this study can provide a systematical understanding of the redox activities of Fe-nanoparticles under various chemical and physical conditions to promote effectively chemical remediation.
□ Results
- The results of two years of joint research conducted by Konkuk University Environmental Team are as follows:
1. Physical / chemical pretreatment of inorganic waste by magnetic separation / acid / base / temperature treatment
2. Injection / settlement of Fe precursors on the surface of pretreated inorganic waste (coal ash) and injection of NaBH4 to produce zero iron on the surface of inorganic waste
3. Activation of PS, PMs by using photocatalytic reaction with other kind of inorganic waste (red soil) and removal of dye
4. Physical / chemical characterization of catalysts using various surface analysis equipment (TEM, SEM, XRD, BET, XPS, etc.)
5. Identification of reaction mechanism
- The results of a two-year joint study by ENSCR in France are as follows:
1. Synthesis of new ZnO + Fe photopentone catalyst using ZnO, which was used as a conventional photocatalyst, and Fe used in Fenton reaction
2. Membrane is used as a supporter to remove environmental pollutants from synthesized photo pentane catalyst
3. Removal of Trace Pollutants in Hospital Wastewater Using Photocatalyst
4. Identification of Reaction Mechanism
□ Expected Contribution
- From a fundamental point of view, the original ideas and achieved results in this project will be very relevant in addressing the issue of Fe nanoparticle reactivity and potential application. We contend that our original ideas will have a strong potential for soil and water reuse and remediation as well as protection of the environment as testified by our strong international cooperation support. Moreover, this project will contribute to training and overall development of our undergraduate and engineers’ students at ENSCR and at KONKUK University. Discussions between the French and Korean will help in the interpretation of a greater number of experiments for the lifetime of this project, as well as enable cross-validations for experimental results. Exchange of PhD and young researchers for short stays in both labs will be promoted.
