Ⅳ. Results of Research and Development
The hybrid MMR utilizes an innovative passive heat pipe to design coolant-free core cooling system during normal operation. The characteristics of heat pipe applicable to this nuclear power plant, temperature - dependent operating limits and heat transfer performance were evaluated and optimized. An annular wick-structured capillary heat pipe showed the best performance. In the first year, when evaluating the possibility of core cooling as a passive safety system of a heat pipe, a bar type structure with a heat conduction structure was evaluated as appropriate. In the second year, the heat pipe core cooling system was designed during normal operation and safety analysis was performed using FEM for three solid cores. In addition, the possibility of cooling the core cooling system using the total heat resistance of the heat pipe system was evaluated during normal operation and the intermediate heat exchange system (IHX) was designed.
For the suggested 3 types of hybrid MMR designs, burnup simulation was performed with Uranium Nitride loaded fuel. The continuous energy Monte Carlo code, Serpent 2 was used for the calculation. From the above, the optimum U-235 enrichments were found for the 20-years of full power operation.
The theoretical design methodology for the hybrid MMR was formulated. The quantitative standards for integrating the modular nuclear reactor with the concentrated solar power system were established, and the design constraints regarding the dynamic operations of the hybrid system were obtained. With these numerical figures, the geometry of the thermal energy storage was optimized under steady state conditions, as well as the basic heat transfer performance.
The feasibility study suggested uranium mononitride (UN) as MMR fuel candiadate, mainly due to high fissile density and fuel performance. Optimization of UN synthesis and fabrication parameter was performed with hydride-nitride process and spark plasma sintering (SPS). Thermal properties of UN was measured by laser flash analysis (LFA).
Prior to the probabilistic safety assessment, the design of the autonomous Micro Modular Reactor and the current status of the safety analysis of the relevant reactor types were reviewed. Based on this, the initiating event lists of relevant reactor types were reviewed and six initiating events were derived:Loss of Coolant Accident(LOCA), Loss of Load(LOL), Reactor Vessel Rupture(RVR), Loss fo Heat Sink (LOHS), Anticipated Transient without Scram(ATWS), and Rod withdrawal/insertion. The transient analyses were performed considering all the possible combinations of safety function failures for the two most representative events: LOCA and LOL Bases on the analyses results, the event trees for the two events were developed and design improvements were derived. In addition, limitations were identified by reviewing the risk assessment methodology of existing passive safety systems.
