Soil environment has high biodiversity for invertebrates, but research of this ecosystem is barely attempted. The purposes of this study are understanding biodiversity of Korean invertebrates and soil invertebrate ecosystem using various physical and chemical factors, as well as discovering unknown species. A soil invertebrate means a invertebrate lives in soil environment at least one part of its life stages. Its diversity may be considered approximately 23% of total earth biodiversity. According to the Catalogue of Life, ±1,740,000 of life forms are described in the world, and it could be estimated as ±400,000 of soil invertebrates. Based on this estimation, number of the Korean invertebrate species could be approximately 11,000, about 37% of Korean animal species. Twenty-one Korean species (10 Coleoptera and 11 Tipuloidea, Diptera) were newly discovered from this research (Acrotrichus lewisi,Dipentium japonicum, Typhlocolenis n. sp., Cephennodes vafer,Bryaxis n. sp., Philoscotus rostralis, Pyxidicerina sp.,Zethopsus sp.,Psalitrus yamatensis,Lederina n. sp., Atypophthalmus jeju n. sp., Atypophthalmus kleini n. sp., Elephantomyia hallasana n. spv Epiphragma gracilistylus, Epiphragma subfascipenne, Epiphragma subinsigne, Lipsothrix odaesana n. spv Tipula coqiiilettiana,Tipula kuwayamai,Tipula tchukchi,Tipula verecunda). Of the 21 species, seven are new species and 14 are new records from Korea.
Totally 112 samples were collected by three times of collecting trips from Gangwon and Gyeonggi provinces, and stored in 95% ethanol with proper labels including information of physical and chemical factors (temperature, humidity, altitude, pH, etc.) of the habitats. The order Coleoptera was focused to understanding relation between biodiversity and various factors (temperature, humidity, altitude, pH, etc.) of habitats. The samples were collected in Mt. Yeninsan (Gyeonggi prov.) and Mt. Gariwangsan (Gangwon prov.). As a result, the various physical and chemical factors were not significantly affected with the diversity of invertebrate order and species. Additionally 1,513 specimens of soil invertebrates were collected consisting 16 families and 50 species of Coleoptera, 2 families and 18 species of Entomobryomorpha, Collembola, 2 families and 14 species of Hymenoptera, 8 families and 13 species of Hemiptera, 1 families and 3 species of Symphypleona, Collembola, and 1 family and 1 species of Ephemeroptera, Neuroptera, Thysanoptera and Tricoptera.
