Heavy metals are substances that naturally exist in the environment, and are also used in human industrial activities. Heavy metals discharged through the environment can be exposed by food, and humans are substances that can be exposed not only through food but also through environmental media (water, soil, atmosphere) and household products (such as cosmetics, sanitary products, toys, daily chemical products, etc.).
This study identified the concentration of heavy metals in the body including lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic and chromium, and evaluated the amount of external exposure by monitoring data by major exposure sources. Accordingly, this study would like to present a strategy for investigating major exposure sources by age and developing alternatives for reducing exposure.
The integrated risk assessment method was performed in accordance with 4 step of the existing risk assessment. The integrated risk assessment method was performed in accordance with 4 step of the existing risk assessment. Exposure assessment used the method of summing up the evaluation using the concentration and exposure coefficients of each exposure source and used method using the concentration of heavy metals in the body analyzed in human biomonitoring. In addition, all risk assessment processes were verified and consulted through the ministry council and expert committee.
In the results of the integrated risk assessment of five types of heavy metals, mercury (inorganic and methyl silver), cadmium and inorganic arsenic were assessed to have no risk of harm, with the hazard index all below 1 compared to the HbGV of the heavy metals concerned.
In the case of lead, both the scenario-based exposure assessment and the human biomonitoring-based exposure assessment were assessed to exceed BMDL01, but this does not directly affect health. The toxic reference value of lead is not interpreted as related to the occurrence of health effects such as neurodevelopmental disorders in infants, but is used as a public health standard considering the socioeconomic additional cost caused by the decrease in the average IQ (average IQ) of the infant population.
Therefore, exceeding the toxic reference value does not result in direct harm to health effects. The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety has withdrawn its human exposure safety standards for lead and is pushing for a management policy to maintain a minimum level of exposure with an non-threshold concept. In the future, it is expected that the level of lead exposure in the body will continue to decrease through continuous monitoring of exposure to lead in the body and management of standards through re-evaluation of standards among foods, the main source of exposure.
Chromium can be exposed through food and was detected among some household items, but the contribution to exposure was considered low. Since the difference between the toxic effects of Cr(Ⅲ) and Cr(Ⅵ) is very large, safety management will require Cr(Ⅵ) centered management by separating the species of chromium.
For this purpose, it is necessary to develop an interspecies separation analysis method of chromium among food and human samples.
