The hydroponic cultivation area for strawberry was increased to 2,049 ha in 2019, accounting for 34% of the total strawberry cultivation area in Korea. However, a nutrient solution composition suitable for Korean strawberry cultivars and cultivation types has not been developed yet. Thus, the objective of this study was to develope a nutrient solution composition for strawberry hydroponic cultivation (strawberry fruit production) and for seedling raising (daughter plant production). In addition, we developed several cultivation techniques related to substrates.
The physical properties of five kinds of root media commonly used in the strawberry hydroponic cultivation were investigated.
Then, the growth of strawberry plants in terms of growth of mother plants and occurrence of daughter plants in ‘Sulhyang’ were investigated when the fertigation points based on volumetric water contents of root media were varied. The fertigation points in this research were settled using a soil moisture sensor.
The adequate amount of the medium has been identified to reduce the burden of the medium cost on growers for strawberry hydroponic cultivation. The appropriate sterilization method has been developed to clean and disinfect medium for a long-time use of medium.
The objective of this study was development of complex damage reduction techniques for diseases and pests, cultivation techniques for disease and pest incidence suppression, early diagnosis technique of major diseases, and heat treatment control for diseases that cause fatal losses in the strawberry hydroponic cultivation.
Data processing and visualization technology for maintaining/managing the proper growing environment of hydroponic cultivation facilities for strawberries were investigated. It aims to develop hydroponic cultivation management technology based on sensing and ICT convergence including cultivation management support service and smart terminal service that can be used in actual cultivation environment.
Results
- For hydroponic cultivation of strawberry, plant growths and yields using the European formula, the Japanese formula, and the newly developed formular based on nutrient absorption rate of strawberry were compared. For Seolhyang cultivar, the newly developed formula resulted in a higher early yield than the Japanese formula thanks to an earlier harvest start date. It also resulted in a higher total yield by 5% compared to the European formula. The composition of the nutrient solution formular for strawberry hydroponic cultivation (for fruit production) was developed. The developed formula has lower ratios of N and K but a higher ratio of Ca compared to the Japanese formula. It has lower ratios of P and Ca compared to the European formula. Concentrations of mineral nutrients in the newly developed formula are N(NO3-N : NH4-N)-P-K-Ca-Mg-S=12.8(12:0.8)-4-5.8-7.4-3.7-3.7 me․L-1. For hydroponic cultivation of strawberry, concentrations of mineral nutrients in the root zone varied when different types of substrates were used even when the same nutrient solution was supplied. In the case of cocopeat, it was necessary to manage the EC of supply at a higher level than that for peatmoss due to possible competition P and Ca components in the early stage of growth. The risk of soil-borne diseases such as Fusarium wilt is increased in hydroponic strawberry farms because the substrate is being reused over a long period. To solve this problem, a multi-cup bed was developed, patented, and the technology was transferred to industrial businesses. The multi-cup bed can significantly reduce the amount of substrate per plant to 1 liter (30% level of practice). It also enables allocation of individual pots to plants to prevent disease transmission. A formular for nutrient solution that could be supplied to mother plants and daughter plants during seedling raising was developed for daughter plant production. This formula was developed based on nutrient absorption rate of strawberry during its vegetative growth stage. The developed formula for seedling raising resulted in a smaller quantity of seedlings compared to the Japanese formula. However, it resulted in an earlier flower-bud differentiation for seedling. Concentrations of mineral nutrients for seedling raising were N(NO3-N : NH4-N)-P-K-Ca-Mg-S=12.6(12:0.6)-4.4-6-8-4-4me․L-1.
- The maintaining of the volumetric water content higher than 55% in the peat moss substrate was effective to promote mother plant growth and daughter plant occurrence of ‘Sulhyang’ strawberry. The volumetric water content higher than 55% in the coir dust substrate was also effective in mother plant growth and daughter plant occurrence of ‘Sulhyang’ strawberry. The appropriate volumetric water content in the mixed substrate of peat moss+perlite was a little higher than those of the previous two media in the promotion of the mother plant growth and daughter plant occurrence. However, the mother plant growth and daughter plant occurrence were improved when the volumetric water content of mixed substrate of coir dust+perlite was maintained to 45% or higher. In the case of mixed substrate of coir dust+peat moss+perlite, the maintaining of the volumetric water content at 48% or higher were effective in promotion of mother plant growth and daughter plant occurrence.
- The medium cost has been saved by achieving satisfying growth and yield using 50–75% amount of previous medium. The growing medium can be reduce by using a simple method of washing out accumulated salts through enough irrigation immediately after the cultivation ended. We have developed economical and eco-friendly medium disinfection technology with only short-term solar disinfection.
- The yellow sticky trap for controlling fungus gnat adult had a 190% effect on attracting adult when installed on top substrate or on plastic film than under the bed. The non-mulching of plastic film on the bed in strawberry hydroponic cultivation reduced the incidence of Fusarium wilt and twospotted spider mite compared to the plastic film mulched bed. pH 6.5 treatment of nutrient solution in strawberry hydroponic cultivation showed 37.9-45.9% control effect of Fusarium wilt than pH 5 treatment. We developed a technique that can simultaneously diagnose major diseases with anthracnose, Fusarium wilt, and Phytpphthora crown rot using real-time PCR, and distributed 500 copies of manuals for diagnosis technique of major strawberry disease and pests to agricultural Technology Center and strawberry farmers.
- The development information collection environment was designed in a strawberry hydroponic environment by analyzing the demand for measurement elements of hydroponic facility environment information. Based on the strawberry hydroponic environment sensing data (temperature, humidity, displacement etc.) and growth-related data (production etc.), the correlation between data pretreatment technology and environment and growth was derived.
Conducted a technical study to analyze the connection between the amount of supply and production at hydroponic cultivation facilities and to visualize information inside the greenhouse. SBC-based environmental management support service system and web-based remote monitoring service were developed for data collection and monitoring in strawberry hydroponic cultivation facilities. Improving and upgrading the SBC-based environmental management support service system was carried out through demonstration of strawberry farms in Gyeongnam.
