● Most of the present lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) use graphite anode and lithium metal oxide cathodes, but they still have a low gravimetric/volumetric capacity and are not suitable for mass energy storage systems. Thus, studies are focused on alternative materials such as sulfur, lithium, and silicon. However, alternative materials have low stability due to large volume change, low conductivity, and dissolution of intermediate products. Therefore, many researchers have solved the problem by mixing conductive carbon material, but the process is complex and can not be mass produced by chemical methods. The commercialization of high capacity material for battery requires a new method of mass production. In this study, we optimize the electrode fabrication method for the electrode materials synthesized or modified by radiation for Li-ion battery (LiB). Moreover, we design full-cell batteries using the electrodes and improve the long-term stability of battery via the study on degradation mechanism described below.
● First, we synthesized novel cathode materials(MoS3/RGO, WS3/RGO) using the gamma irradiation technique for the application to lithium ion batteries. After gamma irradiation on cathode precursor aqueous solution containing ammonium tetrathiometallate at dose of 50kGy under ambient condition, all precursor were transformed into the target materials, confirmed by analyzing physical, chemical and electrical properties using AFM, XPS, XRD and TEM. In addition, the graphene oxide(GO) used by electrode scaffold in lithium ion batteris was transformed into conductive reduced graphene oxide(RGO) which is confirmed by 4-point probe analysis.
● Using the above cathode materials, coin-cell-based specific capacity and long-term stability analyses were conducted, resulting in a high specific capacity values up to 1,200 mAh/g and cyclic stability up to 2,500 cycle charge-discharge times.
● Second, we developed 3-dimensional networked anode materials by radiation-induced cross-linking.
● To conduct electrochemical performance of the synthesized anode materials, we made coin-cell type lithium ion batteries. As a result, all 3D-networked silicon anodes (fabricated by three types of hydrophillic polymer binder mixtures and electron beam-induced crosslining) exhibited the initial discharge capacity of more than 1,200mAh/g and better repeated charge-discharge durability than the non-crosslinked counterparts. Additionally, we confirmed that the synthesized silicon-based anode materials showed a high cyclic stability up to 100 charge-discharge cycles.
● Finally, we fabricated a full cell using the radiation-synthesized anode and cathode materials.
● As a result, the full cell showed a high specific capacity of 1,612 mAh/g, a high energy density of 1,725 Wh/g and a high cyclic stability up to 150 charge-discharge cycles.
