□ Purpose & Contents
This study first aims to design and develop a solid oxide fuel cell that has high performance even at low temperature by incorporating a multiscale architecture technology. The next goal is to develop a high-durability, high-performance, and nano-complex catalyst that can produce hydrogen from a liquid fuel with high energy density. By doing so, the fuel flexibility of the low temperature operating solid oxide fuel cell can be increased.
□ Results
⚪ We achieved the critical performance of our thin-layer/nano SOFC by using multiscale hybrid architecture.
⚪ We designed electrodes that have incorporated nano-supports for the stability of their metal nanoparticles at high temperature. This design led to much lower area-specific resistance than the previous electrodes.

⚪ We acquired original technologies for the fuel reformer by developing a high-activity catalyst for reforming liquid fuels and its impregnation technology.
□ Expected Contribution
⚪ We will use this multiscale architecture technology, which resembles a thin-layer/nano-patterning process, as a crucial process for not only SOFCs but also for solar cells, next-generation semiconductors, and super-capacity capacitors.

□ Purpose & Contents
This proposal aims at development of the multifaced chemical, electrochemical, and structural evaluation techniques to elucidate the thermal degradation mechanism caused by the internal and external sources in multiscale solid oxide fuel cells. At the final stage of this research, the fundamental mechanism of the thermal degradation with perspectives ranging from the atomic level characterization , the polycrystalline powder to the full cell testing, and thus the corresponding strategies to suppress the degradation caused by individual sources will be developed.
□ Results
- In order to investigate the mechanism of Sr segregation occurring on the cathode surface, a thin film model was designed based on the elastic and static energy inside the perovskite material. Also, an analysis method to diagnose the basic structural and chemical properties was developed to derive a correlation between each degradation factor and the degree of that, and this was verified through experiments.
- To demonstrate the thermal degradation suppression method examined through the thin film model, a powder-based cathode coated with an electrolyte material was synthesized through the infiltration and the electrostatic spray process. The effectiveness of the thermal degradation suppression method was confirmed through electrochemical long-term test and a highly durable electrode was developed through these synthesizing method.
- The degree of LSCF degradation, which is a commonly used cathode material, was quantified through structural and chemical analysis, and a new material composition was proposed to minimize the performance degradation. In addition, it showed higher activity than existing materials and can be used as a high-performance cathode material.
- A theoretical model calculated through DFT simulation was suggested to figure out the main parameter for the thermal degradation of the perovskite material in the atomic unit level and controlling the these phenomena. In addition to the analysis based on the theoretical model, screening for various materials could be possible, and more than three types of durable cathode materials were proposed.
- Using the results of this study, we achieved excellent academic achievements such as 48 published papers, 9 applied patents, and 3 resistered patents.
- It is expected that various and systematic researches related to cathode degradation will be possible in the future through these multiscale techniques.
□ Expected Contribution
- In a technical perspective, various academic achievements are expected in an area of the thermal degradation including degradation mechanism, evaluation techniques, and strategies to mitigate the thermal degradation. The degradation mechanism and evaluation techniques from this research can be directly applicable to other electrode materials, which can provide the essential evidence to understand the various phenomena at the electrode surfaces.
- In a economical/industrial perspective, expedited commercialization of solid oxide fuel cells are expected due to cost reduction via the enhanced long-term stability. Accordingly, relevant industries for materials, parts, fabrication, and system manufacturing can be developed.
