This study was intended to scientifically identify the possibility of air propagation and behavior characteristics of respiratory viruses such as COVID-19 in multi-use buildings and establish guidelines for operation of air conditioners and heaters to prevent the spread of viruses. The buildings subject to evaluation were targeted at school classrooms, cafes and underground restaurants in multi-use facilities As for the evaluation method, the behavior characteristics of virus-like particles were identified through a physical experiment, the reliability of the computer analysis model was verified based on the actual test data, and efficient ventilation measures were proposed to reduce the behavior and concentration of droplet particles under various conditions through a computerized analysis. In addition, environmental sample tests, review of possible air infections, and problems in facility operation were analyzed for facilities with COVID-19 confirmed cases. The results of the study are summarized as follows: 1) As a result of testing the environmental samples at the COVID-19 confirmed patient facility, it was confirmed that COVID-19 virus was not detected on the surface of the ventilation filter and air conditioner after disinfection, so it was not significant for remaining viruses after disinfection. 2) As a result of analysis of behavior characteristics of droplet-like particles through physical experiments and computerized analysis of school classrooms, particles spread throughout the classroom after tens of seconds after coughing in the operating conditions of the air conditioner. 3) As a result of analyzing the concentration reduction effect of droplet-like particles by natural ventilation method, the reduction effect was shown to be the best due to the counter-ventilation effect when the windows are opened at the two sides. 4) When the front window is opened at 3.3°C in winter, the amount of ventilation is secured at least once within three minutes due to the difference in indoor and outdoor temperature, and the indoor temperature is reduced to a level similar to the outdoor temperature. 5) As a result of measuring the concentration distribution of virus-like particles in underground restaurants, the concentration reduction effect was confirmed to be around 40% based on the highest concentration when operating the kitchen exhaust fan. Therefore, it is expected that the use of exhaust fans and smoke fans will be effective for facilities without ventilation and air conditioning facilities. Based on the above results, the operation guidelines for the operation of the heating and cooling systems for window opening for maximizing natural ventilation capacity and thermal comfort and virus concentration reduction in winter were presented.
