IV. R&D Results
○ Data assimilation system for utilizing Arctic in-situ and satellite observations as model initial conditions
- Development of global atmospheric data assimilation system
· Global atmospheric data assimilation system (CAM-LETKF) was built based on ensemble-based data assimilation method (LETKF) and atmospheric model (CAM)
· Adaptive inflation and covariance localization were adopted to mitigate sample problem, which is typical in ensemble-based data assimilation methods
· Some scripts (i.e., script for generating initial ensemble members, script for converting BUFR format to special format appropriate for LETKF, and script for conducting data assimilation cycling experiments) were created
· Finally, glocal atmospheric data assimilation system that can assimilate conventional observations was successfully established
· Instead of LETKF, DART, which is linked with radiative transfer model (RTTOV; observation operator for radiance assimilation), and has interfaces with components models (i.e., ocean & sea-ice models) of earth system model, was selected (CAM6-DART)
· Ensemble Adjustment Kalman Filter (EAKF) was used, and adaptive inflation and covariance localization were adopted to mitigate sampling problems that come from limited number of ensemble members
· Script for converting conventional observations in PrepBUFR format, GPS RO observations in NetCDF format, and satellite radiance observations in HDF format into “observation sequence” format for DART was developed
· Quality of analysis was evaluated by computing O-B/O-A statistics and comparing with ERA5 reanalysis
· In brief, global atmospheric data assimilation system was established, and satellite radiance observations as well as conventional observations can be assimilated using the system
· Established data assimilation system was optimized, and ensemble reanalysis data were produced using the system
· Preprocessing modules including quality control, thinning, channel selection, and bias correction were developed to advance capability of radiance assimilation in DART
· Observation error for radiance observations was determined using theoretical method
· Adding satellite platforms for GPS RO data assimilation, selecting observation operator (local vs. nonlocal) for GPS RO assimilation, and determining observation error for GPS RO observations were conducted to optimize capability of assimilating GPS RO observations in DART
· Effects of assimilating one type of observation on quality of analysis were investigated by performing data assimilation cycling experiments using the final version of data assimilation system
· Using the global atmospheric data assimilation system, ensemble atmospheric reanalysis data were produced for period of 2017-2022, with an interval of 6 hours
· Horizontal resolution of ensemble reanalysis was 2 degree, and a total of 10 ensemble members were used
· By comparing the data with ERA5 reanalysis, quality of the produced ensemble reanalysis was evaluated
· In future work, current atmospheric model-based prediction system will be extended to earth system model-based prediction system, and data assimilation systems for ocean and sea-ice models will be developed to establish coupled data assimilation system
○ Integrated modeling system based on a chemistry-coupled global atmospheric model for diagnosing/forecasting high-impact weather events in the Arctic and East Asia
- Development of modeling system
· Investigate the characteristics of the three global atmospheric chemistry models distributed by NCAR and evaluate their performance for the winter season through 30 years of climate experiments
· Develop two modeling systems based on CAM6 and CAM6-Chem and compare 20-year wintertime hindcast predictions with previous results by other seasonal forecast models
- Diagnosis of occurrence cases of Arctic-East Asia high-impact weather using the modeling system
· Using a variety of climate model simulations along with reanalysis data sets, we analyzed the characteristics of the seasonal evolution of the Arctic warming response to increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases, and attempted to find the main causes for the enhanced Arctic warming in the cold season
· Using ERA-5 reanalysis as a benchmark, we assessed the ability of KPOPS to simulate extremely high Arctic-mean temperature events during the boreal winter
· Dependence of SSW-type transition on preceding North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) phases was examined. Positive NAO favors SSW of displacement type with no transition while negative NAO favors the displacement-split type
· Based on three-type classificaion of SSW, temporal and geographical distinctions in the occurrence of cold weather according to SSW types are identified in the mid-latitude regions of the Northern Hemisphere for the subseasonal time scale, within 20 days after an SSW occurrence
· Accuracy improvements of cold weather simulations over Eurasia and North America regions during boreal wintertime after SSW on subseasonal timescale are related to the capturing the observed evolution of anomalous stratospheric polar vortex behavior in models
· Regarding the pattern of severe weather and atmospheric circulation in the Arctic during summer, changes occur in the position and intensity of jet stream in the mid-latitude region, which affects the East Asian summer monsoon and the weather disaster over the region.
· In the KPOPS prediction system, the representative pattenrs related to extreme weather in Arctic summer are simulated similarly to obsrvations, and the changes in jet stream are also well simulated
· The prediction performance of the mid-latitude extremes in summer related to major Arctic circulation pattern in the KPOPS system is relatively good for the temperature anomalies, but tends to be poor for the precipitation anomalies
· Extremely high PM10 (EH) cases are associated with atmospheric stagnant pattern
· In EH cases, the PM10 concentration increased about 3 time in 4 days
· Stagnant patterns with EH cases are affected by the North Atlantic forcing
· North Atlantic anticyclonic anomaly forcing is developed by a vorticity advection
· The EH cases are induced by stagnant pattern through the Rossby wave propagation
· The East Asian heat waves (EAHWs) in summer are closely related to the wave-train pattern originating from the Arctic/Siberian Plains
· The anticyclonic anomalies, which develop strongly in the ASP, are developed by negative vorticity advection, leading to an increase in radiation energy
· The increased radiation energy in the ASP increases the surface air temperature and humidity through the positive water vapor feedback
· Thermal high pressure, which develops strongly in the ASP, amplifies the Rossby wave energy and propagates through upper troposphere pathways, causing favorable atmospheric conditions for the EAHWs.

· Parameter-optimization in ocean-ice model coupling, and advance of vertical structures in upper ocean through vertical grid improvement
· Improvement of Arctic climatologic circulation field using parameter-optimized ocean-ice model coupling, and application to tracing Arctic riverine-freshwater transport
○ Establishment of (quasi) real-time collection system for Arctic atmospheric observations, and an extension towards observations of marine aerosols
- A web-based (quasi) real-time collection and analysis system of Arctic-Global in-situ and satellite atmospheric observations has been established and under operation.
· Two cloud droplet sensors were installed at the Zeppelin Observatory near Ny-Alesund, Svalbard, in order to monitor low-altitude Arctic cloud properties including droplet size distribution, liquid water content, and phase information. Liquid water content measured by the dectectors were typically on the order of 0.1 g/㎥, and during the formation of new cloud droplets, the number concentration hovers around 700 #/㎥. Additional work is currently being undertaken to perform a direct comparison to the corresponding CloudNet dataset for measurement verification purposes..
· Due to the inherent clarity of the air in Ny-Alesund, there are inherent difficulties involved in measuring the wind using a doppler wind lidar at high altitudes. Still, the wind lidar successfully measured the wind component over 20 levels above ground (up to 2 km) in more than 60% of the cases. The wind lidar can accurately report the wind speed in and below the cloud layer.
. We coorporated with Italian Polar Research Institute (ISP-CNR) to collect temperature, humidity, wind direction and speed, as well as atmospheric pressure from the CCT tower since May 2021. In addition, starting June 2022, vertical profiles of atmospheric temperature and humidity in the troposphere have been measured using the microwave radiometer (MWR) with the help of the AWI station. Two cloud droplet sensors were installed at the Zeppelin Observatory near Ny-Alesund, Svalbard, in order to monitor low-altitude Arctic cloud properties including droplet size distribution, liquid water content, and phase information.
