In this study, the present status of marine pollution and potential hazards of polluting substances in KOREAN waters are analyzed through the practical business experiences and literatures on marine pollution. In addition, the present problems in marine pollution control and countermeasures for prevention of marine pollution are presented. 1. COD in major coastal waters is 3.4 mg/l, which exceed by far the environmental quality standard (2nd class : 2 mg/1), the number of oil pollution occurrences were 185 and quantities of oil spill, which have been increasing by 20-30% annually, were 987 tons in 1981. 2. Among pollution sources from coastal industrial complex, quantities of life sewage are 791.6 thousand tons per day, and waste water from factories activity are 1216 thousand tons per day. Potential hazards of polluting substances emitting from ships are composed of bilge of 15,851,389 day M³ per year, sludge of 274,485 day M³ per year, ballast waters of 47,995,705M³ per year, groceries waste of 55,305 thousand day M³ per year, sewage of 3,691,613 thousand day M3 per year. These are tending upward annually. 3. Centering around IMO, international efforts have been developed for prevention of marine pollution. Marine pollution law was enacted on Dec. 31, in 1977, and has been enforced up to now in KOREA. Along with the enforcement of the law, following countermeasure against marine pollution should be urgently taken. 1) Amendment to the municipal laws in accordance with international tendency; Municipal Laws shall be amended to improve facilities and equipments for the prevention of marine pollution according as MARPOL 73/78 conventions came into force Oct. 2, in 1983. 2) Considering recovery measurement from occurrence of oil spill; Nation wide countermeasure organization and non-governmental organization to take charge of elimination of oil spill shall be established. 3) Establishing unified system for marine environment integrity. 4) Strengthening research and study for marine environment integrity.
