This study was carried out to investigate the effects of additional application of calcium salts on fruit softening induced by dichlorprop in apples (Malus domestica Borkh). The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1. The rate of preharvest drop ranged from 4.2 to 9.7 % according to the treatments. The additional application of Ca(OH)₂tended to decrease the preharvest drop rate, whereas it showed no significance. 2. Sugar content of fruits showed no significant difference among treatments. but Dichorprop tended to decrease titratible acidity. 3. Fruit firmness was higher in the mixture treatment of calcium salts and Dichlorprop than single treatment of Dichlorprop during maturation. During the postharvest period, the additionalapplication of Ca(OH)₂showed the highest tendency of firmness amongst the calcium salts. 4. Surface color of the fruits was significantly different in the single spray of 2,4-DP but there was no significant difference among other treatments. 5. Production of ethylene was significantly reduced in the additional application of Ca(OH)₂. 6. Calcium concentration of the fruit flesh showed no significant difference but it was significantally different in the fruit peel and core. 7. From above results, it was proved that 3 additional application of 1% Ca(OH)₂at the interval of 1 week could effectively inhibit the softening of fruit, not harming the prevention effect on preharvest drop of 2,4-DP and fruit quality.
