Anton Webern(1883-1945), a Viennese Atonalist along with Schoenberg as the central figure, had a great influence on music with Alban Berg after the world war 2. He had a different point of view of the Twelve-tone Technique compared to Schoenberg, his teature. He applied a new rule and order to his works. He made an endeavor to create the new style of Tone-Structure including more purified dynamics and elaborate composition of serie and combination of instruments. He was the composer who improved the Schoenberg's technique to the highest point. Anton Webern's dominant basic theory of composition are economical efficiency and extreme concentration. Most of his works are contacted with extremely saved tone and show the maximum of variety in the concentrated style. On the other hand, he developed extremely noble personal style that persued the ideal of purity and the economical efficiency of thematic clearness. Since 1928 Anton Webern's works have converted to the plain works of transparent structure. This is called the Pointillism Age. Pointillism music consists of intervals between sound and beat. It is very refined technique. Its tone repeats the stop and play with some intervals like the falling of water drop. Pointillism which disperses melody into several instruments and connects it to a link was formalized by Anton Webern's followers. The Variations for Piano, Op.27 which the present writer studied in this thesis is the one of the representative works of Pointillism. This is Anton Webern's only piano variation music. It shoves the new field of pointillic style and is played very often. It has influenced many composers greately since the first half 20th century. Also its simple and concentrated style adopts complete logical constrution by using expressive or pointillic techniques. Especially, its whole movement is composed of variations only and it also proves that the nea systematic style of Twelve-tone Technique is the beginning of serialism. It takes a new turn of the field of rhythm, sound, dynamics, and tempo as well as the use of series. It is composed of 3 movements and shows not only purity and simplicity that are the character of Anton webern's work but also the economical efficiency that saves tone. The first movement takes a complex 3 section form (A-B-A'), the second movement takes a simple 2 section form, and the third movement forms 6 section chain of variations. The tempos are slow-fast-slow respectively. The very short second movement, therfore, plays the role of Developement in the sonata-allegro form. In general, the different variation techniques of the musical components that are expressed in symmetrical structure, canon technique, and contrapuntal structure are developed very freely in this work.
