At the present point of time when the traditional music of Korea is newly recognized, this study analyzed Korean traditional rhythm played in Samulnori (Played with four musical instruments). Samulnori, formed recently, doesn't have enough theoretical basis. Thus, the purpose of this study is to establish. Samulnori theroetically through analyzing the rhythm. Above all, we examine the history of samulnori. Then we present and analyze the actual rhythm in the western notation. The summary of the content is as follow : Samulnori is the of a play-group mode by Love of Space, Seoul in February, 1978. The first members were Kim Teok-Soo, Kim Yong-Bae, Choi Tae-Hyeon, Lee Jong-Dae. According as the members are changed into Kim Teok-Soo, Kim Yong-Bae, Choi Jong-Sil, Lee Kwang-Soo in 1979, it has leaped to the level of world music and the name has been fixed as a popular name in music. In 1983, many groups began to play Samulnori. Sarnulnori is a music playing only rhythm with four instruments, Jangu (Doub1e-headed drum), Puk (bass drum), Jing (gong), Kkwaengwari (small gong) indoors or outdoors. The rhythm analyzed in this thesis are kilgunak, Pangilgunak, Pyeoldalguri, Ssangzinpuri, Teotboigi in Yeongtiam farm music, Ochajilgut, Jwajigut, Ujilgut, Kutguri, Jazunmori in Honamudogut, and seven-chae, six-chae, whimori rhythm in Utdori Pungmul. In Kilgunak, the Former six measures are three-beat rhythm regarding □ as one beat and the latter six ones are six-beat rhythm regarding two measures as one rhythm Pangilgunak is a complex rhythm regarding two-beat and three-beat as one rhythm (□□□□) InPyeoldalguri, fdur beatsare one measure and four measures are one rhythm. In Ssangzinpuri and Teotboigi, four beats are one measure and two measures are one rhythm. Ochajilgut is a rhythm in the order of ten-beat, twelve-beat, ten-beat, six-beat, nine-beat regarding □ as one beat. Ujilgut is a complex rhythm of five-beat and six-beat and in Jwajilgut, four measure with five-beat are one rhythm. In Kutguri, four beats are one rhythm but the rhythm is changeable. Jazunmori has four beats as one measure and one measure or two as one rhythm. Seven-Chae has 5 + 5 + 6 + 5 + 5 + 10 beat rhythm regarding □ as one beat. Finally, Whimori has fast four-beat rhythm From the above study, we can get some conclusion. First, the rhythm of Samulnori divides one beat into two or three and is various with complex beat. Second, the rhythm has tension and relaxation by strong-weak change and irregular progression. Finally, Samulnori can always create new rhythm due to the variation of the rhythm with the pecuriarity of each musical instrument.
