In an attempt to study the reinforcing effect of silica which recently gathers much interest in replacing carbon black as a reinforcing filler for rubber, a series of compounds mixed with various silica having different properties such as surface area and particle structure were prepared. As well as the fatigue property, curing behavior, tensile strength and dynamic property were investigated according to the fundamental characteristics of silica. The effects of silica concentration on cure behavior and dynamic property of silica compound were also examined using the specialty selected silica with typical surface area and structure. Cure time of silica compound was delayed compared to that of black-filled compound because of the adsorption of curing accerator onto silica surface due to -OH group presented on the silica surface. For the same reason, the less in particle size of silica or the higher in silica loading, the more in delay of cure was observed since the adsortive silica surface becomes increased. Hardness and modulus of silica compound increased with increasing structure and with decreasing particle size. Highly-developed silica structure exhibited increased tensile strength, while decreament in particle size of silica showed relatively complex behavior of tensile strength which becomes decreased beyond a critical value. Elongaton of silica compound was determined higher than the corresponding black-reinforced rubber compound with same level of loading. From the evaluation of dynamic property, it was found that the loss tangent of silica compound at rubbery region is always lower compared to that of black compound regardless of the silica type used in the present study. Loss tangent of silica compound at 0'C decreased with decreasing particle size, and it increased slightly at 60'C. However, little change in loss tangent of silica compound by varing silica structure could be observed. The estimation of fatigue property showed that the better cut-growth resistance could be achived in the silica-contained rubber compound, and it can be attributed do the low modulus and high elongation of silica compound than black-reinforced rubber compound.
